Please note that you can switch between light and dark modes by clicking on the gear icon in the upper right of the main menu bar. We are hoping that this new platform will prove to be faster and more reliable. Please feel free to explore its features.

Hobbies - A thread for other things we kill time doing.

Asteroid Vesta
Vesta.jpg

Despite being just 300 miles wide it is the brightest asteroid visible from Earth and can even be sometimes seen with the unaided eye in very dark places.

I caught it with 40x magnification and an over 2 hour exposure on an atypically dark night.

M 57 Ring Nebula

This is just a 15 minutes exposure when I was still learning. I will get it in all its glory next Spring.

Kepler, those are all great and it makes me look forward to getting a telescope in retirement, pending the world survives long enough for me to retire.

I'm trying out audio production as a hobby. I've started by learning how to use a free/shareware DAW (Cakewalk Sonar) to mix a new vocal stem with an already-mastered instrumental stem. Lots of terminology to absorb (Gain, Attack, Compression, EQ, Punch, Decay, etc.).

Side note: I also bought my first-ever condenser mic for this experiment, and Jesus H. Christ is there a background sound these DON'T pick up? I've had to shutoff fans, air filters, etc. just to record without having to process out a background hiss/rumble.
