USCHO Music: From Queen to The Beatles to Lady Gaga

Ya know, Billy Joel has said in the past that he didn't intend for it to be interpreted that way, but I still think that's a solid take.

No. That is retconning a 1970s song for a 2020s mindset. Indeed it contradicts the meaning and impact of the lyric.

These are sad sacks drowning their sorrows. BJ sucks* but his lyrics do have meaning.

* And TBF that is one of the last legitimately good songs he wrote and further testament to how tawdry a waste of genuine talent his career has been.

Meh. Lyrics are poetry and are thus open to anyone's interpretation.

No. Words have meaning and authors have intention.

Not all art is abstract. The listener or viewer or reader's opinion of concrete art has zero relevance to its meaning. The idea that the consumer of art is an original creator of meaning is fan service mixed with participation trophy. When I listen to Beethoven I'm a doofus listening to a genius, full stop. What I think or like means zero outside of me. My interpretation is a wet fart in the wind.

Yes and no. Obviously yes in many (most?) cases, but there are countless examples of songwriters saying their lyrics were written either in the abstract, were completely made up, intentional gibberish, a made up story that may or may not have been inspired by personal events, or they can't remember period what it was about. Not to mention 'changing' the inspiration behind a song as time passed by. Surely you've read through the years what Fagen has said about Aja for instance which left gaps in the narrative around Aja herself.

Big Wreck - In Loving Memory Of...

"Look What I Found" reminds me of Ozzy and Gary Moore recording "Led Clones" to make fun of Kingdom Come a decade prior, except in this one we're laughing at every Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell impersonator of the 90s and early 00s. "The Oaf" is an excellent song too though.

If you appreciate the music of EW&F, the new Questlove documentary is well worth the time and effort. If you don't appreciate the music of EW&F, you are not worth the time and effort.

So we can mark you down in the "Dylan was just feeling empty or lonely" camp for Desolation Row, as opposed to "bad acid?" :)

TIL I learned that actor Creed Bratton, who played a fictionalized version of himself on The Office, was lead guitarist for the band The Grass Roots famous mostly for the song Let's Live for Today.

STP - Purple

"Meatplow", "Vasoline", and "Unglued" will all never lose their groove, but "Lounge Fly" was the first song of theirs where I realized there was a bit more to them than just borrowing Pearl Jam's producer and having an ear for good hooks.

She is good and not just trying to be letter perfect Peart. Love the meter change.

And she's gotta have smarter politics, anyway.

They need to put these drummers who can handle polyrythym into an fMRI. They are from a much cooler planet than the rest of us.

Edit: of course they have.
