The scary news is the Socialist will win 2:1 because his run-off opponent is from Portugal's anti-immigration fascist party, which is now the second-largest party in the country. It would appear about 1/3rd of every nation is howler monkeys.

The good news: The Liberal Democratic party regained the lower house in Japan; the woman who leads them is a former punk drummer. Huzzah!
The bad news: They are an ultraconservative nationalist party and she's an asshole who hates gay people and doesn't believe Japan committed war crimes in WW2.

From friends who have spent time there, a progressive in Japan is somebody who admits they committed war crimes but thinks the Koreans and Chinese deserved it.

Bangladesh just pulled off an election which was, maybe, kinda, sort of, freeish and fairish? Though the guy who won it looks like a nepo Dubya / Hillary type shlub.
I do not think the BNP and AL map well to US political positions. They each claim to be "center-left." BNP has more chowderhead Alahuakbar types, and they lean more into Bangladeshi ethnic nationalism, which is just as nasty and stoopid as the Real 'Murican derp variety here. Neither seems to be particularly a purveyor of laissez faire magical thinking. Both at least feign a respect for "the common clay of the New West" common sense imbecility.
