Hobbies - A thread for other things we kill time doing.

We have the gorgeous photography threads for birding and astronomy. I figured we could use another thread to show off some of our other hobbies. Plus, its another distraction from *gestures broadly at the world events*.

For example, I also collect expensive Danish plastic and put them together, and sometimes take photos of them as well.

As inspired by a post I made on Bluesky, here's the Lego Brick Bank building posed with some DC Batman characters.

I haven't seen those books, but when I had a Twitter account I followed a few creators who did similar to that book.

Oh boy. I'm going to have to spam this thread soon with photos of my Lego collection too! I picked up 2 more sets today. Inching closer to 600 sets. Right now I'm sorting through about another 20-30 lbs worth of bulk pieces I have acquired recently. I'll probably part out a few sets from my bulk after that and then see about doing some of my own buildings I have been thinking about.

I also do quite a bit of fly tying. It took a while to get any good at that. But now I only use flies I have tied myself for fly fishing. I also started building rods a while back. I've built a few ice rods for myself and did one commission (for a coworker who says it's his favorite ice rod by far). I also built my first fly rod recently but haven't used it yet. I go through spurts of doing jigsaw puzzles too.

Speaking of LEGO, give me a billion dollars and I’d spend most of my time and money doing this.
I've seen some videos of his pop up on my social media feeds. Some good looking builds.

I really want a house with a large open basement just so I can properly display my collection/build a city. I have 6 of the motorized Lego trains and I really want to be able to have a big enough area to set up a bunch of the track. I'd also have a pirate and medieval section.

I'm so worried about dust (especially on Lego) that I don't know if I could display them that much in the open. I currently have an IKEA bookcase with glass doors, and a fully glass IKEA display case for them. And even then there's still a little bit of dust on them.

As for basement, I'd do an HO train display. I have a good number of train items packed away at my mother's house that I haven't touched in over twenty years.

This. If I had eleventy billion dollars I would do HO displays and only use sets manufactured before 1970. (That carbon smell as they short out is my cologne.)

Great writeup of the birth of Mantua / Tyco.

Fun fact: Tyco went to shit because in 1970 the founder died and the company was bought by Sara Fucking Lee.

Another from my Batman Bank photo shoot:

I thought I had one with the Bat-signal and Commissioner Gordon as well, but I can't find it.

Taking a much needed break from doom scrolling, and instead dug through some more old photos to provide a distraction.

Some more photos of the Lego Brick Bank, but without the DC comics influence.

Also, @Proud2baLaker , I've thought about picking up bulk Lego and sorting them, but I don't have the time or space to clean and dry a bulk lot. Which kills me, because that's likely the only way I'll get any of my white whale Lego sets: Shuttle Launch (1682 or 6339) Shuttle Launching Crew (6346), and Metroliner (4558).

Those 3 will be difficult regardless. I saw the launch crew go up for auction on the goodwill website and it went for like $300+ I think. But that was with original box and instructions.I've rarely seen the metroliner come up. Some of the parts for it are very specific too.

Getting the bulk and cleaning isn't too bad really. Use a laundry bag l, mild detergent. Then you could hang the bag and point a fan at it probably and let it air dry for a bit. I've simply laid mine out on some towels on a table.

I'm working on getting photos set up now to finally share some photos of my stuff. Stay tuned

Ok. Not sure how well this will go. But here is post 1 of my collection; My botanicals and Tower Bridge, Ninjago City sets along with some Speed Champions, and the 2 Van Gogh sets

Post 2 - Some of my modular buildings (Green Grocer has been redone in a different color) and some medieval sets below; some space themed sets; and some various other sets

Post 4 - Basement with more sets and all the bulk. Its a little disorganized currently as I have been sorting through the last batches I bought

I'll stop here for now. I could add another several pictures to show the rest of the collection. Maybe another day. I have lots more Star Wars that are not in these photos and several more displays on shelves of stuff

I would hate to keep all that dusted. 😂 Mine are stored away in the spare bedroom either in display cases from Michael's, glass bookshelves from Ikea, or tucked away in a dresser that was unused.

And then there's the two piles of unbuilt sets for my backlog. 😂

Honestly it's not to bad. The only stuff that has issues with dust is one set of shelves in the basement. Must just be the way air moves through. The other stuff isn't to bad. I can take a small duster vacuum and get a lot off pretty easily or use one of those cling duster type things, gently. When I first started and I only had very very limited display area, I would build a few things and then display for a while. Then take them apart and get to build them again later. That kept dust minimal for sure too
