2026 Elections: To the Midterms and Beyond!

LLM so caveat promptor:

Here is what to watch for hour-by-hour as the first waves of data drop:

🗳️ The 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM ET Window
Polls begin closing in parts of Indiana and Kentucky. [1]
    • Indiana's 5th and Kentucky's 6th Districts: These are Republican-held House seats that became highly competitive during this election cycle. If Democrats are leading or running exceptionally close here, it points toward a high-turnout Democratic wave. [1]
    • Indiana Suburbs: Keep an eye on Hamilton and Lake counties. Significant shifts here will indicate how suburban voters are responding to the national political climate. [1]

🗳️ The 7:00 PM ET Window
A massive burst of data arrives as polls close across states like Virginia, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. [1, 2]
    • Virginia’s 2nd and 1st Districts: Virginia’s 2nd District is a "must-win" for Democrats looking to flip the House. In the 1st District (Richmond suburbs), watch if the race leans closer than expected. [1, 2]
    • Florida’s House Seats & Latino Turnout: Watch Florida’s 22nd, 25th, and 27th Districts. Florida’s 25th is highly expensive and will reveal if Latino voters are swinging back toward Democrats or holding for Republicans. Pay special attention to Osceola County, a major majority-Latino area that serves as a vital demographic bellwether. [1, 2, 3]
    • Early Senate Tensions: In South Carolina, the unexpectedly tight race between appointed Republican incumbent Darline Graham and Democrat Annie Andrews will report early data. [1, 2]

📊 Critical Micro-Trends to Track
Beyond individual districts, analysts will look at specific demographic margins in early exit polling and initial county drops:
    • The "46% Rule" for Independents: Historically, Republicans need to win at least 46% of independent voters to have a successful midterm night. Falling below this threshold usually signals trouble for the GOP. [1]
    • Youth Turnout Margins: Watch the 18–29 voter block. For a strong Democratic night, they historically need to carry this demographic by more than 20 points. [1]

Does anybody with contact with lots of young people have a feel for their engagement relative to prior years?

I would hope an election right after the overturn of Roe would be a bloodbath for Bible Thumpers and fasc in general, but I have not been hearing the usual litany of stories that This Time The Young Will Put Down Their iPacifiers Long Enough To Vote (every year since 2004; never true yet).

That's who put Cheeto in his current position. So I'd be wary of a massive turnout by them.

I love how we're seeing Republican candidates and strategists now bemoaning(usually anonymously) their fate in the upcoming elections, blaming it all on Trump. It's all his fault, his war, his tariffs, ICE killing people in the street, etc. He's the reason they're gonna lose their elections.

No. You people have had untold chances to check this administration and stop them from doing the things they've done. And each and every time, you've refused to do so. Either because you were fully on board, or you were too cowardly to stand up and do so.

You got no one to blame for your situation except yourselves. Own it. Party of personal responsibility.

That's rich.

The one thing that is certain, and so little is certain nowadays, is that America GOT EXACTLY what they voted for in 2024. No question about it. The black lady was too scary. I'm so thankful it's a scary man running for Senate in Michigan instead of a scary woman cause the man might actually win.

So I just got to hear Helly's comments on why (a CNN article on YT), and it's crazy that they don't understand what "hate" is.

She claimed that we need to end the hate when endorsing the nazi. But D's are not hating as much as we are in full contempt of r's, being satisfied when they suffer via their own vote. D's are not demanding that dumb rs get deported, or that they lose their healthcare, or that they lose voting rights- or ANY of the examples of r's have a lot of hate against all D's.

The dumpy worshipers are completely full of hate, helly. D's have consistently voted to keep people who vote against them with a market to sell goods, some support when that market dries up, healthcare in remote farm area, etc. All we have done is help you, and that is somehow hate? Or do you think it's hate when family members are tired of hearing their racist families and just break things off?

Why is reacting to hate now call hate? Why is reacting to racism now racism? The whole "both sides' BS is complete crap, and everyone knows it.

My got, the double standard of these people never ends.

Cause that's the way it has been since Reagan was elected. Americans only believe what they want to believe, facts are irrelevant.

FWIW, 4 years ago they were about 370k early votes in Iowa. There's nearly 500k this year, slightly less than 2 years ago but still high for a midterm. Best guess is that's about 40% of the total votes that will be cast. The split is not as pronounced pro-Dem as 4 years ag, but independents voting early have jumped by about 50%.

Polk County (City of Des Moines) usually reports its absentee count very quickly, so there will be a huge blue mirage that will diminish throughout the night.

Key will be how big that early lead is. 30k or less and it's going to be a long night. 50k or better and the Dems are going to have a really good night. 40k and there are going to be some tight calls.

Exactly. We may have hate for certain individuals, but overall we have disgust for what the GOP has become and espouses as policy since at least 1980, and particularly since 1994.

r/conservative is an especially sad page to visit today. Vote on behalf of all the lame conservative "icons" we've lost since 2024! Because they no longer can. :ROFLMAO:

Lots of laser-focus on Dearborn Muslims for some reason. IDK why. 😁 Cope and seethe, boys.

Just remember, about 55% of MN's total residents live in the Twin Cities seven-county region, and city metros usually lean blue overall. There are a handful of notable exceptions - Fort Worth, Colorado Springs, OKC, and a few smaller ones like Greenville/Spartanburg, Jackson (MS), and Fresno do lean red. Generally-speaking though, as I've had to remind Republican voters in my own family, land doesn't vote, people do, and educated people tend to live in cities/city metros (where the white collar jobs are) and vote Dem.

Just got back from voting. Initially, I headed out at 8:30 this morning, figuring I'd be in and out quick, still have my whole day ahead. To my recollection, I have never, never, seen a line of cars down the drive of the polling place, and then backed up along the side of the main road waiting to get in. Not for Obama, not for Hillary, not for Biden. Hell, not even for Bill Clinton at the old polling spot.

I said to hell with this, went and grabbed breakfast at Mickey D's and figured I'd come back either before or after lunchtime, when there'd be fewer people out. So I headed back there a bit after 11:00, and while there wasn't a line on the road, cars were still backed up in two rows down the drive to the parking lot out behind. I gotta hope that's a good sign, but half this town is educated liberals, and the other half backwoods country derps, so who knows?

That’s the problem, I’m in a first ring suburb.

I’m not saying signs indicate winner, though. Years the D’s absolutely trounce their opposition around here the signs are roughly 50/50.
