RPI 2026-27: Houston Field House, We Have Lift-off!

Perhaps true for Saturday, but I just noticed that the Friday night game from the Field House will be broadcast live on SNY.
Both ESPN+ and SNY on the same night. Is our TV revenue for the day approaching SEC and Big 10 levels??? Keep this up on a regular basis and maybe we can soon pay one guy a half million bucks just like Penn State did. Thank goodness my favorite conference, the SEC, has no interest in getting into the hockey business or we would be outbid into oblivion from at least two fronts.

My guess is that SNY gets the feed for free and shares a fraction of any advertising sales.

As for the SEC , I’m not sure they’d be all that dominant. Many of the big time schools have found that no matter how much they raise, the football program expects 150% of it.

I would be shocked if the Tute saw a nickel....I believe the ECAC controls all broadcast rights, no ?

You are probably spot on but facts should never get in the way of some fun with tongue in cheek sarcasm. Fair game with what college athletics has come to with schools being forced (by the Supreme Court) to buy and pay gigolos in order to maintain success in athletics.

Fortunately, don't think the Tute has reached the point (and hopefully never will) to where last year one paid a star quarterback 5 million who attended ZERO classes for the entire fall semester. In all fairness, however, the guy actually did get his degree before transferring to the school that provided the bonanza and also took them to the championship game.

This year another QB is getting similar money somewhere else also attending ZERO classes. In all fairness again, this guy not only also got a degree but did so in three years. In addition, he is actually doing an internship. At a country club golf course in the deep south where they are open year round. That must entail a lot of "work".

Do we really want this kind of stuff here???

Back from yet another Blackout.

First off, props to the adminstration for packing the student section with passionate, black--clad students (and one banana-clad student). It definitely made the energy better and they led the many of the chants throughout the night.

This was my second game in-person this season and this game seemed very similar to the first OSU game except for one factor, Krawchuk did not stand on his head tonight. The same zone-clearing issues, the same danger on the counterattack; the pluses and minuses of this team from the first game are still present. I can't blame Krawchuk too much, Union was running into him all night and even after letting in a few goals, he clamped down and was fantastic through the stretch run.

Two things I really liked. Rullers looked super dangerous. There was a reason he took the final faceoff with 1.8 left. If anyone was going to make something happen, it was #11.

Also, I really liked that Lang didn't quit. Let in an empty net and the fans start heading to the exit? Forget putting Krawchuk back in net, roll with 6 and look what happens! Claw back to within 1. Don't stop fighting until you are out of time. You would like to see that tenaciousness over 60 minutes but RPI clearly doesn't have the depth to go toe-to-toe for a full 60 unless they are backstopped by a shutout.

I hate that half my posts seem to have a jersey component to them but what was up with no jersey raffle tonight? I thought this year's jerseys were really sharp and loved the NYS logo with a mini-Puckman (perhaps?). I would have loved to gamble a bit on picking up a #5. One day I will get that sweet, sweet black jersey. Oh well, on to tomorrow, go Red!

Good balanced perspective from RPIfanNYC, We can compete with any team when Krawchuk is as hot as he can be, and also this team doesn't give up. Reasons to be optimistic.

3rd game this year that I have attended. Tough 1st period. Down 3 - 0. 2nd period we score 2 - and then the announcer says, "if anyone throws anything on the ice, RPI will be penalized". Haven't heard that before - and won't that just encourage the Union fans to throw something on the ice? What was originally thrown on the ice? I really thought that we would tie this game. Hit the post once. Had some nice chances - but some sloppy passing always undermines their good efforts (in my opinion). In terms of atmosphere - the student section did seem packed - and they moved the band back to that side! The announcer was way toned down. The music was a mix of old and this new stuff they are playing. Still no "WE GOT ONE"... I miss that. Finally, I came with my pockets stuffed with cash ready to throw money at the jerseys... and there was no auction. Is that a first for a Black Out game? Are they going to raffle them at a later game like they did with the Mayor's Cup jerseys last year? That was disappointing.

Someone in the student section threw a piece of what looked like a pretzel on the ice at the ref as he was calling the penalty. That type of announcement is common at sporting events when the fans start behaving like that, though I only recall maybe 1 other time hearing it at HFH.

I personally wasn’t a fan of the “we got one”, but glad to see they are still trying to use the board to engage fans. Speaking of the board, the end zone board was still in use this weekend, running 3 to as much as 15 seconds behind the actual clock. Eventually that’s gonna cost RPI late in a period/game, as they shoot down there twice and may think they have time to pass instead of shoot. I can’t believe nobody that matters has noticed.

They did appear to listen in the PA announcements, the mic was turned down to the point of being almost inaudible.

I’m glad the team didn’t fold down 3-0 and made an entertaining game out of it. The attendance has been so poor lately, you hate to see them blown out when people are finally there to see the games. Hard to make new fans that way.

Please give us a different set of linesmen for the remainder of this season!!! i could not count how many times the drop of the puck had to be repeated and one of our face off men taken out of the circle (often our #11). And yes, occasionally a Union player was moved out, but the vast majority of face off men removed were ours. Did it materially affect the outcome? probably not but you never know how these things alter the flow of a game. And yes, for the most part last night, Union was the better team on the ice. But often having the better team on any given night does not guarantee a victory.

Slow start doomed the Engineers. Credit Union for an aggressive fore check that gave us trouble all night....our D corps was on their heels for most of it and coughed up many pucks in our own end. Union outskated RPI for most of the game, Krawchuk got run again, and again no call. He won't make the year if this keeps up....at some point you've got to respond to the B.S. I would think we'd see a few line up tweaks tonight to try and generate some mojo. We definitely missed not having Tapper in the lineup.

Football - after having SLU score first when we muffed a punt and they drove 25 yards - we scored 8 consecutive TDs on 8 consecutive drives to win 54-7. And the game was not as close as the score ! Total yards for us were 599! Hope we saved some offense for next weekend against Ithaca where we will never every yard and point we can score. That game will be for the Liberty League Championship and the NCAA auto bid. Go Red!!

The face-off rules were changed substantially this season to more mirror the NHL. Checkout Trefzgar's podcast.

Disappointing weekend.
We couldn't keep up with Union when they turned on the speed and it caused chaos. We were all over the place and the defense fell apart.
Union forward Free is a natural goal scorer. He is going to be a good one for Union. Unfortunately, if he keeps up his outstanding play, he will not be at Union next year.
I can only hope that we learned something from the weekend and can apply it next week.
It is great to see a team that doesn't give up and plays 60 minutes no matter what the score is.

union just knows how to score on krachuk he always gives up goals to them and then he is great vs the rest of college hockey

I'm not sure it's a Union thing. Last fall he stopped 78 of 82 against them over two nights. In the five Union games I can find, he's at .914, and against everyone else he's at .916. This weekend wasn't his best (56 of 63), but Union had 5.0 expected goals Friday and Free had three goals on the weekend. They earned some of those.
