Colgate 2026-27

Reid Dyck led Colgate out onto the ice for tonight’s pregame warmup.
Albin Boija did the same for Maine.

Colgate penalty (holding). Killed.

Maine penalty (hooking). Killed.

Colgate hits the crossbar on a breakaway.

Maine penalty (hooking). Killed.

Colgate 10, Maine 5, SOG after one.
Colgate 0, Maine 0, score after one.

‘Gate’s strongest period of the season, me thinks.

Colgate penalty (slashing). Killed.

Colgate penalty (slashing). Maine PPG.

Colgate penalty (interference). Killed.

Maine 19, Colgate 11, SOG after two.
Maine 1, Colgate 0, score after two.

8:38 remaining in regulation.
Maine 26-13 SOG. As a reminder, Colgate had 10 SOG after the first period.

Another Maine beauty. 2-0 Maine.
And another wicked snipe. 3-0 Maine.
4:42 remaining.

Maine 32, Colgate 16, SOG final.
Maine 3, Colgate 0, score final.

Other than sniffing around in the transfer portal one wonders what the hell our coaching staff has been doing for the last three years...hiring a coach with virtually zero college coaching experience is not only perplexing, it is downright idiotic...and, yes, this is one of our "emphasis sports" at Colgate...

Tonight, sitting two rows behind the Colgate bench (and one row behind the newlyweds) for the final two periods, I couldn’t help but think of the old expression, ‘death by a thousand cuts.’ As a ‘Gate fan, that is what our 0-6 season to-date feels like. We aren’t getting blown out 6-1 or 8-0, but we are losing blood one shift at a time…

no PPGs, not ten shots per period, beaten to the puck in our own end, too many penalties (PPGs Against, or even just time we are on defense, not offense), stupid puck turnovers, too many opposition ENGs, etc. I can’t help but just watch the time tick by each game knowing that we are only one or two goals down, but we seemingly have no ability to even get one of ‘em back ourselves.

It is frustrating for us fans, but it can’t be fun for the competitive players nor the staff either. Can you imagine these bus rides home from Boston and Maine? I look forward to the breakout game when we get the monkey off our goal-scoring backs. I just hope it happens next weekend at home against UMass Lowell. Time is running out…

P.S. - last week, I saw a Colgate player struggle to get back to the ‘Gate bench with an apparent injury. Then between periods two and three, I saw our Captain limp out from the locker room to the bench for a TV interview (and limp back). And then tonight I saw a ‘Gate player in a foot boot at the fire ring in the fan zone pre-game (with Kyle Kim). Can I assume that those are all the same player?

In early spring we also lost probably our best recruit - defenseman out of the USHL - to Dartmouth...Dartmouth is sufficiently loaded that they sent him back for another year in the USHL where he's put up impressive numbers in 2024-25 and 2025-26...NOT a good sign...

Currently maybe we shouldn't schedule OOC games, hopefully we'll do ok in ECAC games ! Other conference teams are getting more talented players now from the WHL, OHL etc as they're allowed to play D1, I guess we're not getting them. I was told Ohio State hands out between 50 and 60 million dollars a year in NIL money, we simply can't compete with the big schools anymore. Plus the fact that these "elite" players all want to play in the NHL and I really wonder how much they really value a degree from Colgate. How many players from Colgate will play in the NHL ? Complaining about Harder is starting to fester here on occaison, can you really blame him, recruiting must be next to impossible. Ending rant !

You make a solid point Shabby...no question...the recruiting landscape for schools like Colgate is definitely more difficult that 3-4 years ago, but here's something to consider: in light of these changes one might wonder why we didn't opt for MIH leadership that had a long and deep experience in the tough world of recruiting...Colgate has delved into major/junior ranks without a huge amount of success...I think virtually all of us understand these issues (maybe on the periphery) and set our expectations accordingly...but it's not asking too much to expect a competitive hockey program...we may still realize this soon but, as you know, I have real concerns...there are still kids out there who can skate at a high, high level and/or possess a scoring touch that is above average...passion vis-a-vis objectivity? I will continue to support the program no matter the challenging issues you mentioned...

Hard start to watch, and three straight shutouts is the worst part of it. I don't think it's the goalie though, Dyck is at .911 with 175 saves. Five goals in six games is the problem. Recruiting won't get fixed this week, but one good night up front would change the mood in here fast.

I have supported the program for over sixty years and will continue to do so. Right now it's getting harder and harder !
