This is from 2011, so the actual inequality is worse. There's also a 3rd graph somewhere which shows people's estimated actual distribution, and it's still way off.

This. Social democracy is more right-wing than democratic socialism. The former still believes in capitalism as a primary economic system, but tempers it with strong social safety nets and pro-worker, pro-consumer regulations. Democratic socialism takes that a step further and seeks to fully nationalize key industries beyond healthcare (especially utilities/energy and transportation).

In a better America, the majority conservative position would be social democracy and the majority progressive position would be democratic socialism.

Very well stated, but we need terminology that is much more direct. I would call the former "mixed economy" and the latter just "socialism." That would be a legitimate debate where I could see myself crossing the aisle time after time to find the best solution, not being trapped on one side because the other was noxious and idiotic.

Ticket splitting is a sign of a healthy democracy.

After the Great Divorce, that will be Blue America (CA, NY, IL et al.). In Red America (TX, FL, OH et al.), the majority conservative position will be dominion theocracy and the majority progressive position will be white nationalism.

It really may all just come down to that test of babies where they flash a new thing on a screen and half approach with curiosity while the other half shrink back in fear. That may be a fundamental division of the psyche that drives everything else, genetic and set.

The inequality doom loop always ends in revolution. What happens after the revolution is what is interesting. The failsons hanging from gibbets is just local color -- an irrelevancy. How does a successful revolution remake society to be more just?
 
There will be no revolution. We're broken. It's already over. Yeah, I still volunteer for campaigns and do shit because it fills my days. What are my alternatives? Sticking a shotgun in my mouth? No thanks. My neighbor will take care of that for me when the time comes.

We can't even organize a national strike because everyone is worried about how it will effect them financially. 45 years of trickle down has trained multiple generations to be greedy, me-first motherfuckers who deep down don't give a shit about other people. Our society has no understanding of collective sacrifice.
 
Helena Foulkes massacred the incumbent Rhode Island governor in the Democratic primary tonight. The first governor to be primaried in eight years; the first in Rhode Island since 1994.

ETA: Providence mayor Brett Smiley was also primaried.

Even Hovey said this. No need to worry about Trump, cause there's only so much one person can do in the government, and the bureaucracy, laws, and the system as a whole will serve to check his ambitions.

Needing your next paycheck to pay the mortgage / rent, put food on the table is greedy and makes someone a me-first motherfucker?
 
Actually, I agree that his qualification of "if it endangers safety or fareness," is actually a great way to handle it.

The problem is there are more people in this forum who argue with you daily than there are trangendered athletes playing NCAA sports, and that this is such a sticking point for people is frustrating.

I've had Hovey on Ignore since before the last time Cornell went to the Frozen Four, so I can't speak to that.

But the message was "WE have to ACTIVELY protect our institutions, which are our tools of law and process." That meant and means we need strong people standing up to the Nazis to protect those institutions, so we can use those tools to thwart them now and bring them to justice once we have regained political power.

Institutions are not and never were walls. Men and women of character are the walls. Institutions are repositories of tradition and authority to be used to maintain democratic values. They are spears but we will always need spearmen.
