Movies 2026: Shame and Money

I would recommend anyone who has a digital library to connect their accounts with Movies Anywhere (it started as a Disney initiative, but a lot of producers jumped on board, except Paramount, MGM, A24, and Criterion Collection). It (currently) safeguards against one entity (Sony/Google) from removing items from your library as Movies Anywhere populates *all* your connected libraries with the film (if Movies Anywhere eligible).

Or you could just buy physical media.

I know, I'm old, and things are different these days. But there's something about being able to hold a record, or blu-ray, in your hands, to read the liner notes, to admire the cover art, to know that it's yours, that's special to me. Yes, I watch streaming cause its convenient, but if I really love a movie or tv show, I want to have my own physical copy.

Like The Lord of the Rings movies. Of which I have them in three forms. The DVD extended cuts, which I will never get rid of simply for the packaging, the theatrical cut blu-rays, and the extended cut blu-rays. Haven't gone the 4k route yet, because there are issues with the 4k versions.
 
Physical media is going away. Sony is getting rid of it for videogames and the PS6 probably won't even have a disc drive. DVD's and Blu-Ray of anything but blockbusters are nearly impossible to find. The movie studios don't want to be shelling out money to have discs made, shipped all over the world and then split revenues with retailers. They would rather you buy it digitally from them; or better yet sign up for their streaming service. They control 100% of the profits and never have to worry about losing sales on a secondary market.

I buy physical copies of the media that is most important to me, and that I know will hold up over time. That's why I also have the extended cut LOTR on discs.

Another example - my vinyl first pressing, original Steve Albini mix of In Utero. I play it 3-4 times a year, store it carefully, and I'm willing to bet I could probably sell it on eBay for 3-5x what I spent on it in 2008 - but it's a landmark to me, so I keep it.
 
Have been bit by bit putting together American Beauty by watching 5-10 minute clips. It's a great movie with excellent acting performances. I am amazed the movie was even made -- it certainly could not be made now. The 90s was hardly glory days for intelligent film, but god the distance we have regressed even further in the ensuing 27 years. Brilliant writing, fine acting, and props to trying to bring something interesting in front of a blighted mass audience.
 
My friends thought I was strange at the time for wanting Suvari to get the hell out of the way so I could see Benning more.

I get that teenage me was supposed to instinctually lust after the former, but it didn’t happen.
 
American Beauty acted like it was doing something that was never done before when it had been done a hundred times before. It just did it with bigger names and hype upon hype. Sixth Sense got robbed.

I haven't seen American Beauty, but really enjoyed The Sixth Sense. Shyamalan hit that one out of the park.
 
The initial reviews for Coyote vs Acme are at 94% on the Tomatometer. Better than Spiderman (90%) and even with The Odyssey.

No, I'm not expecting a billion dollars...just saying the reviews are good.

Sixth Sense was crap. I figured the twist from when he was sitting in the living room talking to his wife and she never answered back. Donnie Wahlburg was the best part, until he got money and just stopped taking risks.
 
Secret of the Blue Room (1933). Bad formula melodrama, although beautifully shot. I mention it because it features an actress I had never seen before. Gloria Stewart. Can't act. Can't deliver a line. But a gift from on high.

To be clear, that is strange. The scene of her reclining on the couch though, and the flashback scenes of her happy, she is quite inviting.

All four principle actors in that movie were excellent. Wes Bentley stole the show. I didn't think I had ever seen him before or since but he's the scientist who gets wiped out by the tidal wave in Interstellar.

The overachiever was Sam Mendes. That's a directorial debut!

And check out that couch! Me too. 30s women's curly hairstyles can make almost any lovely girl ridiculous. They are quite distinctive!

Scoob, if you've never seen The Black Cat (1934), check it out! It is my favorite movie of the period. I think it may be the most visually beautiful movie ever made. It takes all those stylistic choices we love and turns them up to 11.
