Movies: Poor Things, Barbie and Oppenheimer are stuck in La La Land

Spiderman earned a record $72 million last night, surpassing the old record of $62 million set by Avengers: Endgame in 2019. It is on target for a $300 million opening weekend.
All showings at my local theater are sold out for the weekend. Maybe I'll see it Monday.
 
Ran (1985). Considered by many to be the best film adaptation of any Shakespearean works. I don't know about that, but the film is classic Kurosawa - epic, gripping, sprawling and a period film. Loved this.
 
Move over Avengers, there's a new champion.

Spiderman opened to $360 million domestically and $942 globally. In addition to shattering Endgame's record Thursday night ($72 to $60) it also set the record for best day ever, with $168 on Friday, surpassing the $157 of Endgame. In three days of release it has already sold more tickets than Supergirl, Moana and Star Wars combined.
 
The new Spiderman is one of the top MCU Marvel Movies IMO. The two movie Infinity War/Endgame arc was better but Spiderman is the most popular Superhero on the planet.

Not to downplay the popularity of Spidey, but the headlines discount inflation way, WAY too much here.

Dan Murrel actually did a breakdown using this stat until the info became unavailable... It's probably been 4-5 years since that source went kaput.

I do appreciate how he's tried to take a nuanced approach when comparing modern movies to older ones, fully acknowledging that it's hard to do an apples to apples comparison.

I'm sure Dan will break that down in tomorrow's update. The problem I have with adjusting is there is no way Gone With the Wind comes out today and makes $2.2 billion or The Sound of Music does $1.7 or even Jaws makes $1.5 at the domestic box office On the other hand, it's well within the realm of possibility animated hits like Snow White ($1.3), 101 Dalmatians ($1.2) or The Lion King ($1.1) do become that big in the modern age.

Adjusted is a nice number to look at but I don't put a lot of weight to it.

This is an interesting perspective. One, I never thought about before, and one I agree with.
