1000 in 1980 went a lot further than a 1000 in 2026. Russell's point was extra cash is extra cash. I'm sure there are some D3 NIL deals that give a little bit or a lot more than that.

Guess my point overall is that it's going to be a factor going forward. Nothing life changing, but if it comes down to two very similar colleges (say cost, rank of program, job opportunities, etc things a freshman would weigh), a college with more local opportunity for sponsors/partnerships could have the edge.
A bit of a theory, but I feel NIL could be more of a factor that rural/semi-rural schools could take advantage of. Lot of these schools are the only one in their area (if not the only with a hockey program) and many are tied in closely to the community. Seen it personally from my time in Plymouth, but any school with a strong local identity could leverage local partnerships versus similar D3 schools in urban areas near more competition.

I totally agree with this paragraph. Look at the trouble Plattsburgh got into, vacating their 1987 title (simmer down bakdraft), because local businesses wanted to help out the local team. Now, that sort of stuff is fair game. When Potsdam was dominating basketball, let's just say certain things were happening behind the scenes from local businesses... But again, now, that would be all fair game.
