Motorsports 2026

AND a perfect strategy call from Ferrari. They let Lewis win this race- which I think he would have even without the VSC cheap pit stop. Lewis was so much faster than the Mercedes at the end.

No doubt he would have won without the VSC, unless one of the Mercedes crashes him out when he would have tried to pass them.

Guess we'll see if Mercedes reliability becomes an issue. Canada with Russell and now Barcelona with Kimi.
it is an issue. Will it become enough of an issue to let Ferrari into the game or not. It's already enough that Kimi and George are trading points losses.

I really think this is borderline an emergency for Mercedes, given how many failures they have had all over the grid. At least Charles' problem was with his power steering, and that system has been around for a really long time.

McLaren and Mercedes have both had multiple powertrain faults that resulted in zero points. Only Williams and Alpine have avoided a Merc powertrain failure.

The beating of each other over the heads with the rule book has started. Ferrari has won an argument about the rear diffusers on Mercedes cars after Lewis performed a post race inspection of Kimi's car himself following the Monaco podium.

Mercedes, meanwhile, has withdrawn their argument about George Russell's Monaco penalties.

More on the Ferrari/Merc diffuser squabble.

The way F1 teams utilize the rulebook loopholes or squeeze just beyond the limits of the rules feels like the NASCAR engineering of the late 90s and 2000s.

None of the full blown cheating of the NASCAR of the 60s, 70s, and 80s; but the slight tweaks that caused rules to be re-written. Like how the Gen-4 cars were shaped for maximum aerodynamics yet still fit within the rule book. images(4).jpgRFqLgWN.jpg

Speaking of NASCAR, the San Diego race might’ve been the least visually appealing I’ve ever seen. It was on a naval base and had nothing but concrete as far as the eye could see.

Agreed. It had potential, but it just felt wasted. The carrier was right there, but it was parked at a turn and gone immediately. And then there was the section next to the bay, but the catch fence obstructed any view that would have given. The taxiway and hangers could have been a scenic view as well, but the camera angles barely showed them.

I also read that access to the base was (obviously) restricted, but the fan zones that were set up were lacking, food ran out quickly, and even designated taxi/Uber areas were moved or closed before the O'Reilly race ended.

The only "cool" aspect was the crow hop the cars got over the hill in one of the first corners, but even that lost its luster quickly.

Chicago at least had the setting sun framed by the downtown buildings to give some visual interest late in the race. Sucks that I actually missed having the Chicago circuit watching the San Diego race.

And I fear Chicagoland's return is going to flop. Ticket prices are astronomical. It's like they want it to fail so they can continue to sell of the land for warehouses.

I really love the elevation changes at this track. The big up-hill, tight, turn three makes for such gorgeous visuals of the cars catching each other then stretching out.

I assume a lot of circuits don’t allow drones, because some of the views we’re seeing today are breathtaking.

Helluva a drive from both the Mercedes drivers and the Red Bull drivers as well. I wish the almost three-way battle at the end had happened, which it likely would have if Max had his second pit stop a few laps earlier or didn’t spin out in qualifying yesterday.

I was in awe of that racing drone keeping pace from turn 5 through the wide turn 6 into turn 7. It just showed such a great view of the cars battling each other through that section of the track.

*Edit* So, with the free-view AppleTV provided for the race weekend, I flipped between the F1TV feed and the Sky Sports feed. Should I feel bad that I preferred the excitement and announcing from the Sky team?

Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen wins the NASCAR Cup Race at Sears Point. His eighth Cup road course win in his short career, tying him with Tony Stewart and one shy of Jeff Gordon.

Completes the weekend sweep as he also won the O'Reilly Series race there yesterday.

Would’ve been tied with Gordon if Hill hadn’t blown the corner last week.
