Maine Black Bears 2026 Offseason: Missing Out on Mistlebacher

Mikael Lalancette (Le Soleil de Quebec) was the first to report on Poirier hitting the portal (LINK). Would imagine a major Quebec newspaper would probably be a reasonably trusted source here, on top of McMahon doing his own due diligence following up with his sources.

Anyone thinking JP is coming back is kidding themselves.
We have 6 days. My guess is his name pops in there and is immeadiately transferred.

It looks like of all the guys who actually entered the portal, Bodie Nobes is the only one still looking for a home. Hope he lands on his feet, I liked his energy.
I dont think Stewart has landed yet either. But I agree on Bodie, hope he lands somewhere and does well.

I was planning on Lipinski hitting the portal. Any word on if that is still on the horizon? I figured he would have entered by now if he was leaving. He was doing school events for the team this last week so I would assume that is a sign he is staying.

Out of everyone on the team, he would have been my first choice of someone who would be looking for a fresh start. I know he made comments about the coaching and the transition being hard. Think he was in Barr’s doghouse for a good portion of the year. I thought he had a good first weekend and good little stretch there the last month or so. But I was frustrated by his game. I didn’t love his motor and effort. When he played well, the effort was there and results always followed.

Seems like a great kid. If he and the coaching staff are committed to each other and are on the same page - then okay. He is massive, has a high ceiling, and is great on the dot (I know I am a broken record, but they need to be better down the middle). If they are all committed to each other then I’m excited to see his progress knowing what to expect year 2.

I still think they need:

A top 6 quality center
A Top 4 RHD
A depth RHD/or someone that can play both sides
3rd goalie

Still lots of time. But I love l the size Barr has brought in so far.

Certainly looks like Lipinski is safe and will be returning.

I also thought he played better as the season went along. I wonder if he has another level of physicality that he can tap into to really develop into the #2 center this team needs. His face-off ability is already among the best in the nation and he was great on the PK when he got a chance last season.

With the ice time available to him next year, I am expecting a big Y2 breakout for Lipinski.

EliteProspects dropped their April Top-100 rankings for the 2026 NHL Draft and have Maksim Sokolovskii rising up to #29 overall.

Their blurb on him:

"Other risers in North America include the WHL’s top-two scorers Liam and Markus Ruck, rising goalie Tobias Trejbal, and playoffs standout Maksim Sokolovskii. After an impressive debut weekend where Sokolovskii looked like a potential A-grade prospect, his minutes dropped as he took on a depth role for London. There, he honed his puck management and defensive game, turning a major corner in mid-February. Now, after thriving in surging minutes in the playoffs, the 6-foot-7, highly mobile, ultra-mean defenceman with flashes of exciting skill ranks just inside our first round at No. 29 – and we think he could get picked even higher."

Any chance he joins in 26-27 instead of 27-28?
Very unlikely at this point, given how LHD heavy the blueline is at the moment and that Barr already brought in two other shutdown guys in Bales/Romaine. He has nothing left to prove physically at the OHL level but could stand to continue refining his offensive side. It'll be interesting to see which team drafts him as that could affect his development path.

RPI fan here. Thoughts on Motew's game?
From what we did see of him, I liked what I saw. I said early on the year that I hoped we would see more of him, and then that didn't really happen. It is true that he didnt get a ton of playing time, but from the time he did I was happy with what I saw.

Interesting a reminder email today went out about season tickets and locking in. Didn't see one last year. Wonder if some are not renewing. Doubt it but interesting with the wait list like it is.
