Today, I recall Julian the Apostate. Dude declared himself more powerful than Jesus, started a fight with the Pope, and started and lost a war in Persia due to his avarice and dumbassery.

No real reason I'd remember this.

American Catholicism is just an excuse to hate women and gays and polish the knob of secular rulers in exchange for real estate tax waivers, while still getting to dress up in fabulous outfits.

JD is echoing a long running authoritarian msireading of Matthew 10:34.

Righties love to quote the first line as an excuse to murder people. It's obvious from including the context that Jesus is saying, "Don't think this life is going to be easy. Your own loved ones are going to come at you with everything they've got, because, just by existing as this new thing, you are challenging their self-image as righteous and good."

Indeed, Jesus is anticipating the very sort of fury JD evinces in his comments, and which so many conservative American Catholics parrot. Just by declaring yourself a Believer and going around spouting scripture, you aren't what Jesus had in mind. In fact mostly the opposite, as he counseled you should pray and observe in private in an intimate relation with your own personal Jesus.

Shorter Jesus: "The Kingdom of God is within you, asshole."
 
Typically you only get excommunicated for really serious theological offenses, like suggesting women, as equal human beings, can be priests.

It is chef's kiss that the last high profile excommunication was over real estate.

I'm just waiting for Kegsbreath to use Austin 3:16.

You sit there and you thump your Bible, and you say your prayers, and it didn't get you anywhere. Talk about your Psalms, talk about John 3:16... Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!
