RPI 2026 Off-Season: Please Pardon Our Appearance As We Upgrade This Area

For those who are planning to attend the games in Albany tonight, I'd be interested in knowing what kind of a fan following Penn State might have.

I know the media around here devote an enormous amount of attention to Penn State football, and the football team has a huge following wherever they play. Penn State's other sports get next to no media attention. I'm wondering if tonight's attendance will indicate that the media are correct in thinking that interest in Penn State hockey is minimal, at best.

Personal experience seeing PSU in the Detroit area NO ONE showed up. Has it changed? Will see. A little closer to Albany but not much

They got 75K through the gate for a game, but it was on a Saturday at Beaver Stadium so people may have gone by habit thinking it was football.

I forgot 2 days!

Today is 28 March 2026. There are 190 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 4 October 2026 for the start of next season.

Great seeing so many cherry and white fans at the games yesterday! @Waite21 there were a decent number of Penn State fans last night, not as many as Michigan (who always travel well) but I would say they were the second biggest contingent of fans of the four teams.

That UMD/Penn State game was great to watch, such constrasting styles but both equally matched and great goaltending. Also, it was a good demonstration of the level of play RPI needs to get to in order to compete on a national stage (assuming they win their way through the ECAC). Should be a fun game on Sunday, see y'all there!

Totally agree with your post. Attendance was 6584 for the two games, which beat the 4217 that showed up for the Loveland Regional which had the host school Denver playing there. Kind of a shame that Penn State lost only because the joint would have been rocking in a B1G matchup. Anyway, the only school that didn’t bring a band was UMD. Maybe the RPI Pep Band can take their place tomorrow…. 😃
Game time is at 5:30 on Sunday. Hope to see plenty of Cherry and White fans there.!!

On the TV broadcast, after UMD's first goal, the camera panned to two fans standing up and cheering enthusiastically, and the announcers explained that these were the parents of the Plante brothers, who had combined on that goal.

It was nice to see that the person sitting directly behind them was wearing an RPI shirt. :)

some context- penn state football this year was famously shit, so i think the fans were happy to pivot to the other successful programs. last years frozen four and the injection of high end talent boosted their cred on campus, got to take advantage of the down years football and women’s vball had. women’s hockey had a great year too, wisco needed extra time to beat them in frozen four semis and they had multiple olympians including Janecke on USA. wrestling is the other big dog having their regular dominance but you can dedicate attention to both.

also it’s nice to see a school known for other sports being willing to invest in hockey. the other example here is UConn who even Nightingale admitted outplayed MSU that whole game. only school with both hockey programs and both basketball programs in the national tournament, and Geno is a big hockey fan you can find at most of their games. they have the donors and resources willing to put their money in- Pegula for Penn State, D’Amelio for UConn.

i’ve watched both the past 3 years since the sharks have picks at each school and the growth has been great to watch. others may consider them villains but that’s just a sign of the growth of the game. the same few villains recycling gets boring, if college hockey really wants parity this is a good sign.
