Wisconsin Hockey 25-26 Hastings Year 3 - Turning the Corner?

I think Wisconsin was penciled into the perfect region for them to have success. Dartmouth can be beaten by this team so long as they get even average goalie play AND stay out of the box.

Should they win, they’re 2-2 vs MSU but MSU has i think a more mature team. Not sure how else to put it. I’d say it’s less than 50/50
To win that potential matchup. Maybe 40/60.

Don't you guys think it's pretty much going to be all on Hauser? If he goes, so does Bucky. If he can't make some stops, we're in deep trouble.

Stavroff has Geoffrion - Caufield like numbers. Badgers have faced a lot of B1G snipers, so it's nothing new, but which guy shows up in goal?

Also, I just remembered my password. Hola.
Welcome back. I know we butted heads (hence your signature), but I don't remember why anymore! LOL....

This is creepy, yesterday I was updating my sig and I said to myself....."whatever happened to Wisko McBadgerton" and here you are 24 hrs later. I haven't seen an Exile on Dayton Street post in a coon's age.........

If they give Dartmouth open looks, they are shooting at the cookies all game long. I'm hoping his injury was making him susceptible to the high shots and now he's healthy. They say they are fast, but eye witness reports say other-wise. Like any other game, play solid team D, pass the puck to your own players and stay out of the box. They can beat anyone if they do that.
Stavroff is a sniper. Give him space and he will score. Dartmouth plays a very structured game similar to Cornell with excellent goaltending. Also like others have said they are excellent in the neutral zone. Princeton really clogged up the neutral zone slowing the game down. Dartmouth can get up and down the ice with the best of them don’t be fooled. Should be a good game but I say badgers by a goal.

Goofers hiring Brett Larson from SCSU. I think it's a good hire. Goofer entitled fans not so much: https://gopherhole.com/boards/threads/breaking-coyle-hires-brett-larson-as-new-gophers-coach.121321/

He was one of the guys I was hoping for when Badgers hired Hastings. I thought it was going to be Larson.... X saying the other 2 finalists were Potulny and Steve Rohlik, which shocked me. Raboin from Augustana was the top choice and reinked with them....
Holy shit! Can you imagine Rohlik with UM resources and talent???

Larson is a very good choice and I think Potulny would have been as well.

The only issue with the rodent program imo is the egos involved. Motzko is a a good coach. Lucia was a great coach. But UM thinks (and perhaps rightfully) they’re the Alabama or Notre Dame football of college hockey so the pressure to win there is 10-fold what it is in Madison, East Lansing and even Ann Arbor. The pressure is more like what you’d see at BC and BU.

If Rohlik wasn't interested in the Wisconsin job, can you imagine the outrage if he took the Goofers job from Wisconsin fans? I still haven't heard the bottom line on how hard WI went after Rohlik. Maybe Hastings is on the Motz 8yr plan and we'll get another honest run on Rohlik, but there is some contentment to let him run his show at OSU relatively out of sight/mind of Wisconsin right now.

My Uncle is a huge UMD fan, and told me Larson runs a very similar prgm/style as that of Sandelin, and used to be a coach there as well. We'll see how it all shakes out, but after going through Motz' players to get to the Champ game, there hasn't been much success in St. Cloud lately, so my thought is Goofer admin is saying he is the right coach, but now we give him resources, regardless of medicority the last 3 or so years. The fishbowl is small in gooferland though, that's for sure.

Who knows, Goofer move may be a windfall for Badgers.

Badgers struggle mightily with a clogged up neutral zone against OSU. This scares me big time.

Me either. Undoubtably I was 100% right about everything, though.

If you subscribe to the theory that the B1G is way, way, tougher to play in (for various reasons) than the Eastern conferences, then the Badgers should do just fine. If you look at almost any of the stuff on paper vs. Dartmouth, it's an uphill battle.

Certainly would be a good time to have another one of these unexpected 4 game win streaks!

They can play with and beat any team in the country when they show up for 60 minutes and play team hockey - 200' game rolling 4 lines, and Hauser being sharp. They showed they can lose to most any team this year, too. Which team will they be out East?

I would hire Oliver at St Cloud in a minute. Will be a popular hire, the price will be right, they should give him the keys.

Interesting stat is that while the Badgers are 58th in goaltending, two other B1G teams, ND and OSU, are both actually worse! Lotta goal scorers in the B1G it would seem.

Agree... which team will show up? Overall, when it comes to Mountain climbing, we've done this season completely backwards.

Should be well rested at least!

Right now, Wisco is +175 to +190 and Dartmouth is -235 to -260 on a couple of sites. Under 6.5 goals is leading.

I say Hastings should go all in and pull the goalie to start the game!

Well said. Rooting for the Big Green here, but Wisconsin is a very good team and I expect a tight game. May come down to special teams, and if so 'dI give the slight edge to Dartmouth. Both teams have had lulls in the PP: Wisconsin's has been in a bit of one lately and Dartmouth was for the entire 2nd half of the season before getting a bit of a spark back in the playoffs. Dartmouth's PK has been better than Wisconsin's and that's been strong all season.

But that's on paper not on the ice. Plenty of variables and with 2 teams that are close in quality, who knows how it'll play out. Looking forward to being in Worcester Thurs to see it. I have always liked the Badgers, so it's an added bonus to get to see them live for the 1st time. Glad Cole Caufield isn't still there!!

On Dartmouth, they are deep and balanced with high-end skill among 4-5 guys. By ECAC standards they are good to very good across the board: depth, goaltending, PK, faceoffs, coaching, D, few penalties, etc. No clear weaknesses, other than (1) SO & FR heavy (2) occasional over passing and (3) not physical. They are big enough but just don't choose to play punishing hockey. Clarkson tried to abuse them to no avail. P-ton was probably their worst match up. P-ton clogged the neutral zone and played to shorten the game - I give them credit - a senior heavy and defensively disciplined team, Pton maximized their resources (former Cornell guy as coach and similar strangulation on D). Stavroff has a ridiculous release and accuracy. Foley is smart and creative. Cleaves is more the setup guy. At 6-5" great reach, able to create his own space, calm under pressure.

Re the SoS, it is what it is and I agree with the critics. Not the players fault.

On Wisc, I will only say that I have respected W since the epic Johnson years and much enjoyed my time in Providence (1982) where half the bars were RED and the other half were GREEN (ND).

Love the reports.

Wisconsin is the tale of two teams. One is the team that beat Penn State twice in Happy Valley and then less than a week later the other Wisconsin team that didn't show up against OSU in the Big10 playoffs and played one of their worst games of the year and lost 1-7 (with a goal in the last minute of the game). Your guess is as good as mine which team will show up.

This has been a nagging issue IMO in the first 3 years of Mike Hastings and needs to get figured out for next year for them to really be a BigTen Championsip caliber team.
