Ohio State Women's Hockey 2025-26

  • Total Revenue: $336,077,887
  • Total Expenses: $320,394,965
  • Surplus/Profit: Approximately $15.7 million
Figures from the article...

Big revenue figure for sure, but also a very large expense number. Probably the surplus/profit goes to the muzzinator's "astronomical" travel and recruting buget.
In a recent year Colgate had a $8 million in revenue, spent $35 million on athletics and under their capital plan somehow managed to build a $40 million rink a decade ago.

Certainly OSU is only one example, but it is hard to understand the greed that exists where no matter how much money there is, for some people/issues…there is none.

Hadn’t been to Columbus in a couple years but was there recently. The construction and growth not just in the past 20 years but literally in the past 5 years is incredible. It remains hard to believe that a new rink hasn’t made the list.

I think we are never supposed to give up hope, so I will once again renew my hope that the new President builds them a rink.

Muzerall, like Johnson, will leave difficult (albeit different) shoes to fill when she retires. The program success most likely goes poof if the rink hasn’t changed by the time she leaves.

When her time is done I will float the idea to her of leaving her bedazzled spike heels in the trophy case. They'll be more popular than Dorothy's ruby slippers! 😁

Popular, but given Dorothy's slippers went for $32.5M and tOSU still plays in a ... arena with "charm", I would guess they'll never be more valuable.

Something that boggles my mind on the rink.
OSU athletics revenue was 336 million last year. A Colgate like rink in 2026 dollars is about 60 million. Not even 20% of annual OSU athletic revenue. Most of us, our house costs more than 20% of our annual income!

Colgate built their rink 10 years ago for $40 million. $8 million annual revenue for their athletics department from what I see.

Columbus is notorious for needing more rinks in general. If money is the problem (eye roll) I wonder what the financials would look like on building a decent rink like a Colgate, letting OSU be the main tenant and then just run it as a for profit rink selling ice to the community.
One thing to keep in mind is that Ohio State generates a lot more revenue than this. Their trips to the College Football Playoff have large payouts, and the Big 10's TV contracts depend on them and about four other schools (Michigan, Penn State, Oregon, and USC). The rest of the money gets distributed to the other Big 10 schools.

I would bet that, in the not too distant future, those five schools, and some of those in other conferences, are going to decide that they don't need to share that revenue with the programs that don't generate that cash. Minnesota and Wisconsin need to be preparing for life after their athletic budgets crater, but they keep spending as if the expect the gravy train to continue forever.

You can't put a price on sentimental value.
Brad Frost liked the idea when I mentioned it to him today.

I am late on this but the Buckeyes advanced to the National Title Game tomorrow with a dominating 5-0 win over Northeastern. Ohio State got off to a slow start, but once they got rolling, it was game-over. The Buckeyes lit the lamp four times in the first period with three of those goals coming in the last 3:27 of the period to take a commanding lead. Scoring for Ohio State were Joy Dunne, Kaia Malachino, Sanni Vanhanen, and Emma Peschel. Neither team scored in the middle frame. Sara Swiderski scored in the third period to put the Bucks up 5-0 and that is how the game ended. Ohio State outshot the Huskies 42-15 in this one. Hailey MacLeod stopped all 15 shots she faced to get the win. Lisa Jonsson got the start in net for Northeastern and stopped 37 of the 42 shots she faced in the loss. Northeastern ends a great season with a Hockey East Title and an appearance in the Frozen Four. Ohio State will take on Wisconsin tomorrow for the National Title as the Badgers defeated Penn State 4-3 in overtime.

Here's a cut & paste of interest.

On March 19, 2026, Ohio State announced a new five-year contract extension for women's hockey head coach Nadine Muzerall, extending her tenure through the 2033-34 season.
The Lantern +1
Key Details on Salary and Contract (as of March 2026):

  • Previous Salary: Under her 2021 deal, Muzerall had an annual base salary of $250,000, with additional supplemental compensation for championship performances.
  • Recent Salary Data: Public records indicated a base salary/rate of $397,512.50 for the 2025-26 period.
  • New Deal Terms: While specific salary figures for the new 2026–2034 contract were not immediately fully disclosed, the extension ensures her retention as one of the top coaches in NCAA women's hockey following two national championships (2022, 2024) and six consecutive Frozen Four appearances.
  • Bonus Structure: Her contract previously included significant incentives, such as 8.5% of her base salary for conference titles/Frozen Four appearances and 17% for national championships.

Hello from State College, PA. It was great seeing osualum86, Mrs.86 & Hockey Buckeye at Pegula on Friday.

Great pair of games on Friday, of course. The tourney opened with the dynamic Buckeye win over Northeastern. Next came the heroic upset bid by the Nittany Lions’ fans & players. They almost pulled it off.

So it’s on to the Final. Here’s to hoping for an epic battle between the top two teams. Let’s Go Bucks!

That was a game,eh? I'd say your team carried the territorial advantage more than UW did and probably generated a few better scoring chances. I'm curious what your opinion is going to be on her challenge at the end of the game. I don't think the situation at that time warranted a desperation attempt like that. I was pretty convinced you were going to tie the game before that happened.

Next season you've got a strong team and I think Dunne is the PK favorite. I know Wisconsin will be the preseason number one but your team should be.

Thanks for the classy post, Timothy! We had some great scoring chances, but Ava McNaughton was outstanding today. Digging a 2-0 hole is not something you want to do against Wisconsin, but I was proud of the effort to come back and tie it in the third period. I was at the other end of the ice, so I did not see what happened at the end. My guess is that our coaching staff thought a Wisconsin player closed her hand on the puck in the crease, but there was apparently not enough video evidence. The problem was we did not have any timeouts left, so when the challenge was lost, it resulted in a delay of game penalty. I agree with you that we will be strong next season with the players we have coming back, along with another talented freshman class coming in, We'll miss our seniors and the contributions they made to the program. I think Wisconsin will have a strong team next season as well, although it will difficult to replace some of the star players who will graduate and head to the PWHL..

Getting into the numbers here, Wisconsin defeated Ohio State 3-2 today to win its second National Title in a row and third in the last four seasons. The Badgers opened the scoring in the first period on goals from Kelly Gorbatenko and Laney Potter to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Neither team could find the back of the net in the middle frame, so the score stayed 2-0 heading into the final intermission. The Buckeyes got two goals in the first six minutes of the third period to tie it at 2. Scoring for Ohio State were Kassidy Carmichael and Jocelyn Amos. Claire Enright scored the game-winner for the Badgers at the 13:42 mark and the Badgers were able to hold the Buckeyes off to get the win. Ohio State outshot the Badgers 36-34. Wisconsin's Ava McNaughton stopped 34 of the 36 shots she faced in the win. Ohio State's Hailey MacLeod stopped 31 of the 34 shots she faced. Ohio State misses out on the big prize, but did win the WCHA Final Faceoff and set a new school record for wins at 36 (36-5). Wisconsin finished the season with a record of 35-4-2, the WCHA Regular Season Title, and the 2026 National Championship. Both teams will likely contend for the National Title again next season.

IMO, the original mistake was calling the TO when she did. Ultimately, she didn't opt to pull the goalie then. If you're going to pull the goalie, teams use their TO to rest their top offensive threats and draw up a play. I suppose she would have then used it later, and the point would be moot, but based on how the last two years have gone, maybe coaches will be less hasty to burn their only TO for those reasons. For Johnson last year, there was a greater chance of success for the challenge. But if such a play is going to happen two championship games in a row, still having a TO looks more important than we may have previously thought.

Nice post and I know you are a good fan, but I will take issue with this.

There was conclusive video evidence from a couple different angles that no Badger skater covered the puck in the crease.

Amazing game and amazing rivalry.

For the record, I'm 99.8% sure that Wisconsin had already used their time-out when they challenged last year.

They were on a power-play (because of the "too may skaters" penalty), so if they had lost the challenge, the last 19 seconds would have been four-on-four, but with the faceoff in the UW defensive end, and that's not so good. So, "clarity' of the video notwithstanding, a similar chance taken by MJ last year.

Desperate times, desperate measures.

That blew my mind. I was like "oh sheet, here it comes", and they left her out there. Even at the next faceoff, it looked like she decided to make the pull very late. And then the silly challenge. I think the pressure was getting to her. I'm looking forward to the pseudo interview on YouTube where she breaks down how the refs got it wrong with Sierra. 🤣
