UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

I became curious about how much is spent on the hockey program and looked up salaries.
In Barr, Alfie, Bennet, Fonzi, Cullina, Ritz and the Performance coach theres about a million in payroll. Couldnt find Oconnor to include so add that in +-100k.
This is take home does not include any benefits etc.
Wonder how this stacks up around HE and nationally. Seems to be pretty decent to me.

My issue with football is that there is no revenue stream playing FCS football. They are probably averaging 3K paying fans per game and the media deals are miniscule. Add to that they struggle to reach .500....even in a watered down league. Just seems like a never ending cycle of burning money for little return.

In a perfect world.....Maine would have determined prior to the Alfond athletic campus renovation that football would be dropped......men's soccer would have been added back....and UMaine could have made 4-6 programs their priorities to compete on a national/regional level (M & W ice hockey, M & W basketball and M & W soccer would have been my choices).

That would make too much sense
 
There are not very many Division I athletic departments that sponsor all four of football, men's basketball, baseball, and men's hockey. When you narrow it down further by size, financial resources, and geography, Maine's almost 1-of-1.

UNH is consistently more competitive in football. But they don't have baseball, and spend $0 on basketball, and less than Maine on hockey.
UVM is consistently more competitive in basketball. But they don't have baseball or football and spend less than Maine on hockey.
Lowell is smaller than Maine, and about as competitive in basketball, hockey, and baseball, but they don't have football.
Albany is a cut above Maine in basketball, similar in football and baseball, and doesn't have hockey.

Etc, etc, etc.

A handful of influential people have convinced the ones in charge that has been true. I stumbled onto an internal report the university conducted in 2013 that showed there was no correlation between the football program and the size or frequency of donations. Oddly, that study (to the best of my knowledge) was never released publicly. Wish it had. Unfortunately, we are stuck with that albatross which will effectively strangle the other athletic programs in perpetuity (despite the once-in-a-generation coach that takes the hockey or hoops teams to glory)

That report seems slightly like BS. Two huge donors have skyboxes up at hockey and go to football- and have one there too. Would argue they like football just as much or on par..they have plaques in the arena. Do the math. It's a tailgating social thing, and a black hole for money that the university but it isn't going anywhere.

Thanks, it isn’t surprising. He wouldn’t have played at Maine, not at the level needed.

I didn’t have this feeling about Marques at all. I do have this feeling about Lipinski.

I think Lipinski could be a transfer candidate because it seems he got in Barrs doghouse. I don’t think he should have been benched on what we saw on the ice in the games. So there was something there that we can’t see that got him in the doghouse.

Lipinski is as good as gone. I personally was not impressed with his play.

Coughlin is probably gone as well. Usereau hopefully stays.
 
not sure what happened with Coughlin, he never seemed to get a look despite being pretty sound of a skate and playing a much simpler game than Peterson and Usereau at times.
 
If anyone has access to BDN, Larry has his annual season wrapup including comments from Barr. In summary, Barr says the team's poor culture and weak goal tending were too much to overcome. With 13 new players being introduced to college hockey some of them didn't realize how difficult it was going to be. Some played well and then disappeared. He said bringing in another goal tender is risky. Sounds like he is going to stick with those two unless they opt out. He said he would never have such a young team again.

Great call out by Mahoney "Their combined save percentage of .892 was tied for 49th among 63 Division I programs and it was the worst save percentage for a full season since 2010-11, when sophomore Shawn Sirman and freshmen Dan Sullivan and Martin Ouellette posted an .884 save percentage." Somebody mentioned earlier in the season how this team reminded us of 10-11 (finished pretty similarly with wins despite a very strong group of skaters).

We know, he said so no less than 14 times throughout the season.

I saw enough from Lipinski this season that I'd want him back next year.

Won draws at the highest rate on the team at 61% (which was T-4th highest in the nation) and that was much needed. His defensive metrics were also pretty strong, if he actually leans more into his size and adds some more physicality to his game I could see his offense growing next year. Mostly I think he's a guy who would thrive in a bottom six role with PK responsibilities next season. That's not sexy by any means, but he's a good fit for it and would give this lineup a bit more length if he can fill that role.

Sirman was awful
 
Maine didn’t have any losses when they scored four goals and only a couple when they had three. I’m not saying Maine’s goaltending was great, but the overriding theme in most of their losses was not scoring.
