2026 NCAA TOURNAMENT MEGA-THREAD: THE ROAD TO UTICA

Exactly!

A tournament like this with a dream matchup like SNC vs Hobart in the quarterfinals wouldn't have been possible a few years ago. This ultimately is what Tim Coghlin was fighting for when he flipped off that camera that one time. And last year's tournament was great because of it, and this year is shaping up to be the same thing
I never did see that Coghlin presser. Would love to. Got a link?

I guess he was right, and the NCAA agreed.

SNC is psyched to play Hobart. It’s not a champions mentality to want to win it all without having to go through them.

Coach Taylor has told the team they haven't earned anything yet, just the opportunity to play SNC. Streaks and records don't mean shit now. They anticipated this matchup and will be ready to play all three periods and OT if necessary. You gotta love this .

When's the last time Hobart lost at home? I could look it up but you no doubt know that off the top of your head. (And could probably recite the box lol.)

You would probably be able to find a link if you went back to DIII hockey news twitter posts from March 2024.

February 26, 2022 Hobart lost to Skidmore 2-3 at THE COOLER in the NEHC playoffs. We still made the NCAA tournament and lost our last tournament game that same year. If Hobart and Utica both win next weekend we'll see you in Utica. Good luck..

Four years. Incredible.

Pretty sure that nobody honestly wants to see HC in any round, if they had their 'druthers.

I'm going to offer a different opinion:

Now we have:

1v8
2v7
3v10
4v5

In what should be four really good games to earn your spot in the dance
So what you're inferring is that the first round is "essentially" a given? That's the point I was attempting to make. With the current system of AQs, the first round won't serve for much other than throwing the weaker conferences a "bone". Some of the attendance at these games appeared to back up that point.

I've seen plenty of "weak" AQs come into the Cornerstone and give SNC hell over the years. St Olaf was the worst AQ of all time back in 2022 and SNC had to score 2 in the last few minutes to force OT against them.

That's a great point.

Unlike basketball, there isn't a dime to be made via a D-3 conference tournament (and very little interest among the AQ fan-bases, regardless of revenue.) So, why do it?

It's truly a jerk-off all the way around, especially considering that it's so easy to select a deserving field, and have competitive games from the get-go.

Fun fact about that game. Putin started his invasion of Ukraine 2 days prior. Hobart had a player from russia, and Ukraine on their roster that year. That locker room might have been just a little bit awkward.

Now they have a player from Belarus and Russia. And I believe the Ukrainian was still on the team last year.

This is a representation of the number of USHL, NAHL, and D1 xfers on each of the rosters with their current relative NPI rank. The Norbert/Hobart tilt should be a doozy! Disclaimer: The BCHL is widely regarded as being nearly as strong as the NAHL, but I've chosen not to include them.

The statistical correlation between the two is not very strong, reinforcing the postulate that the NPI at D3 isn't that valid comparing E/W.

Yes Ukraine, Russia and even France that year. .The Ukrainian(Buzoverya) and the Russian(Malakyan) were interviewed by the student paper and gave some interesting personal perspectives on the war . The two students were very friendly on campus and were glad to be playing hockey in the USA but were very concerned about the impact of the war on their families. They were both very good economics majors and will be part of the hockey alumni attending the Final Four IF we make it past the Green Knights this Saturday.
