UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

Okay all,

I put together a preliminary proposal that I hope to eventually send to Darius. I’m not sure posting it to the full channel would be the best, but I would appreciate input from others (especially former FoH members) to get your thoughts, suggested edits etc. I’ll preface this by saying I don’t work in sales but I tried my best haha. I also removed an “implementation plan” as I thought that was a bit overkill until/if we get a bit further along in the process.

Shoot me a PM if you want a copy! Hopefully we can get this out to Darius soon!

To quote a highly reliable source close to the action ... "The cabal of (college) hockey insiders protecting one of their own".

Exactly what is happening here with McMahon, he’s not hiding it. He was singing UNH’s praises when they extended Souza 2 years ago.

There are many examples of underfunded programs finding success — and we have two very recent examples in Merrimack and Dan’s solid post about Miami University basketball (where the gap between haves and have-nots is 10x that of college hockey). Has there ever been an example of a coach with a very poor record, 10 years into a position, turning around a program simply because the university decided to drastically increase funding? The suggestion is absurd.

A number of pages ago I posted an analysis of NFL coaches who have won in the SB era. The majority of coaches win within 4 years of their hiring, and there are inly a select few who it takes 5+ years.

Even look at this year. Vrabel (1st year) and McDonald (2nd year) both made it to the SB in short order. Heck look at how BAD the patriots were under Mayo. Largely with a similar team, Vrabel got them to the SB IMMEDIATELY. Don’t you think coaching has an impact there?

Chuck also brought up Cignetti at Indiana. We have also talked at length about Carvel at UMA, Barr at ME…

I always think to Field of Dreams… to paraphrase: “If you build it, they will come”.

In this situation “Build it” is a winning culture/record, then “they will come” is more fans, greater funding, investments, etc.

The biggest issue you should all be focusing from McMahon's take on UNH is the fact the AD doesn't fund the 3rd paid assistant coach spot. That should speak volumes to what level of support the athletic department is giving the program. You can argue about coach ability, NIL $$ ability, facilities all you want. The fact UNH doesn't have a paid 3rd Asst on that staff can't be refuted.

No one has refuted. It is fact.
I disagree...there are some here like Chuck who think a new head coach will solve all those problems. Lack of institutional support can't be overcome by a coaching hire anymore like McMahon said. Take a look at BC basketball a a perfect example of that. Until the school goes all in on the sport...this is what you will get.

Exactly!! So wanted to post in his x account after they won was it the resources Scotty B has or his coaching? 😆

Well sure $$ talks...but you are saying that 8 years of not much is soley based on that? Not sure who you are affiliated with and not sure of how much NIL etc Merrimack can offer...but it cant be alot? How do you explain his track record (Borek) over Mike Souza's?

Last night after they upset PC Mike mcM was quick to point out that no other coach has brought the team to the HE semis more etc..and he did it before the NIL days. (Also has had decent luck in the portal I might add).

Scott Borek deserves all of this success...but I doubt he did it on big $$. If I'm wrong please correct. My point? The guy can COACH.

Oh please. Another MS7 apologist.

Are you seriously suggesting that the piss poor record of MS7 over the last eight years is because he doesn't have a third assistant? If so, I've officially seen it all and am forced to ask a question...how are you related to him? Second cousin, perhaps?

Souza could have Ralph Engelstad Arena at his disposal with its full suite of training facilities and staff and still mismanage a game and the entire program.

His teams would still be out of shape and fade in the middle of the second period. Drafted recruits would still exit via the transfer portal only to flourish upon their departure from UNH. He would still alienate 95% of his team and play favorites as reported by current and former players and their families.

Even with world-class facilities and budget, he'd still be operating in the Witness Protection Program dodging his responsibility to engage with fans, STHs and even the media, unless those reporters are personally selected with cherry picked questions. He has zero visibility. Or, credibility at this stage of his career for that matter.

Is this because he doesn't think he has to? Is he scared? Is it arrogance? He can't justify his lack of performance except to make blanket excuses that have NOTHING to do with his in game management, lack of team fitness, player development or why his best recruits leave.

So, he hides. Like his lame duck year from a few seasons ago, the hockey community is starting to circle its wagons to protect one its own from fair and justified criticism.

Blatantly transparent and utterly predictable.

I would love to see the MS7 apologists provide a list of the paid 3rd assistants for the other 10 programs in HEA.

Because apparently, this is the new reason latest excuse why MS7 can't coach/recruit his way out of a wet paper bag lol 🤮 😂

What will the excuse be once the renovations are done, the navy blue in the locker room s slightly the wrong shade and is offputting to potential recruits because it disrupts the flow of their qi and blocks their chakras?

Maybe MS7 is losing out on the blue clippers because Bauer is the sponsor of the team and not CCM? No, wait! It's definitely the music selection at The Whitt and the fact it only has ONE dollar dog night a season.

Oh, the humanity!

Perhaps, the Zambonis are too efficient and make the ice too slippery for modern college hockey, but just at UNH. It could also be the rink's wifi is disrupting the radio waves between the bench and video team causing MS7 to make incorrect in game adjustments.

Too basic. The budget doesn't cover in game wardrobe for MS7, forcing him to look shlubby in his too tight shirts with no collar stays. The mothers of potential recruits notice these things and would prefer their sons to play for Greg Brown or Mike Ayers with their GQ good looks and open invitations to strut their stuff at Paris Fashion Week.

The excuses are getting old and long in the tooth. Just like MS7 in a job he never deserved in the first place.
