Edit: Well, okay, maybe not out of reach, but if he had been closer in pledged delegates, I'm certain some super delagates would have come along, too. He only lost the pledged delegates by 359. If he had been ahead by even 1 pledged delegate, I think, or at least like to think, that a bunch of superdelegates would have given pause to voting against the will of the primaries and caucuses. Hillary being ahead gave them the cover to do what they probably all wanted to do.
