UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

Yes. Scuttlebutt last year was he was approached but declined for personal reasons which won't be disclosed here.

That said, if Ayers DID become coach, season ticket sales would skyrocket from the legions female cat fans who want to swim in his baby blues as Mrs. Grouch and @HockeyRef would attest.
What would make him an improvement over Souza or any other coach if Ayers did accept the job ? I was always curious why a UNH guy coach at the Heights preferred BC over his alma mater. I would think Ayers would recruit better players or at least attract more top quality players to UNH. How would his coaching style be an improvement over MS7 ???

LEGIONS, I tellya. Our eldest was still a young-ish teen when we wandered into a small Chinese take-out on Rte. 108 in Newmarket which had limited sit-down capacity at the time (it's still there, with either less or no sit-down capacity) after a home game, which was followed by a FoH event upstairs at The Whitt, where underclassmen were the designated "hosts". It's probably 45-60 minutes after the game by the time we get to Newmarket. Sure enough, who's sitting at one of the few tables off to the side but young Mr. Ayers with his GF at the time, trying to keep a low profile with the local yokels. It was probably working, 'cuz I didn't notice a thing 'til little Ms. Junior Jet-Eye starts tugging repeatedly on my arm, trying to draw my attention to a pair of droopy, sad blue eyes seated in the corner, apparently. After taking a brief nonchalant glance, and confirming her instincts were correct, JJ-E and myself had a quick, whispered huddle (out of The Great One's earshot), where my daughter was instructed on how to respect a student-athlete's personal space away from the rink, especially with Ayers' GF being in the direct vicinity. But she never stopped her admiration of MA34, and for the rest of his UNH career (I think this was his Junior year?) JJ-E would always ask if we'd be stopping at the same place for Chinese takeout after every home game we attended. I'm pretty sure it wasn't for the food lol.

Sadly, she never caught lightning in a bottle again, and 20+ years later, MA34 and JJ-E have grown their separate ways, found separate spouses, and are living their best lives apart. But if Ayers ever returned as UNH HC, Grouch is 110% correct, the old days of the thousands-deep wait list for season tickets would return quickly.

Interesting that they start in the 16th though, the ‘cats could theoretically still be playing hockey at that time. Maybe based on past results, they made a prediction they’d probably be out by then? I hope not… as that would truly show what little faith people have in the program…
Theoretically, yeah, they could still be playing hockey on March 16th. However, any chance of that being a home game is super remote, if not totally impossible.

Nothing is guaranteed, of course. I don't think anyone has the slightest clue as to what kind of "coaching style" Ayers would bring with him, any more than you guys at BC would have the slightest clue as to what "coaching style" UNH's Jeff Guiliano (a BC alum) would have if he was ever tabbed to be BC head coach in the future.

One thing MA34 would immediately enjoy that MS7 doesn't have is a better reputation with the advisor/agent community, who often make decisions with/for their younger clients as to where to matriculate. So yes, at least initially, you would think Ayers would draw better/more highly rated players to Titletown than Souza has been drawing (which won't be all that difficult for anyone to accomplish TBF).

A$ to why Ayer$ ha$ cho$en to $tay at BC $o long in$tead of returning to hi$ alma mater in $ome capacity, that'$ anyone'$ gue$$ ... 😂

Aside from that $$$ maybe his experience with BC is teaching him what is required / needed to make UNH a top notch program again in HE. Reminds me of Jerrod Mayo in his first season with the Pats last year with limited coaching experience.

I agree the chance for a home quarterfinals game (taking place weekend of March 14th, if I’m doing my math correctly) is very remote.

Still, if they make it to Boston, that is the following weekend (March 20/21) and I imagine they’d still be using their locker rooms for practices etc.

If this were to happen, I imagine they would push things out a week (or more, in the unlikely event we win HE and get the autobid).

It would be a GREAT problem to have to push the start of renovations out. It would mean we have caught lightning in a bottle (to put it very lightly) and take down the best HE has to offer. And I imagine we would all be jumping for joy in this scenario.

A guy can dream…

I think many of us here would be quite happy to see Ayers become the next UNH coach. Perhaps he could even convince a couple of his recruits to join him in Durham.

With MS7 still having one year left on his contract though, and facilities renovations slated to begin soon, I think that decision may have to wait another year.

As was discussed a few pages ago though, our ADs contract is up in June. Maybe if we get someone new they want to “cut the fat” for underperforming coaches, and Souza may be a causality for a buyout of his final year (partial or full, who knows).

Many big decision loom in the near future, and TBD how the rest of the season goes. If we make it to Boston, I would be absolutely SHOCKED if they moved on from MS7 at seasons end.

Two big weekends left in the RS and 12 points on the table. Let’s see how many points we can get!

This is fantastic news, thanks for sharing Norbert! It’s great to hear these renovations are nearly underway!

On a related note, I imagine this news likely seals the last year for MS7 on his contract, as he had his fingerprints all over getting the external funding and such. The AD will give him one year to make it or break it with the new fancy renovations to see if the “facilities upgrades” make a big difference. It will be even more pressure on MS7 and co. Though, as he’s running out of excuses for the poor/inconsistent play.

Wonder if new facilities will help with recruiting top talent, and if it has been having an influence on MS7’s continued ability to nab decent recruits. It will be interesting to see how things shake out with the portal this coming April…

Again, thanks for sharing! Certainly a step in the right direction. The “size” of that step, is yet to be seen…
My guess is that even if UNH went on a run the last home game would be the 14th in a quarterfinal game. There would not be any impact on the locker rooms with mobilizing construction and demo to start. Also the women will be done so they could start there or the other locations first.

On a different note, renovations start March 16th. $19.7M with new locker rooms for men's and women's to start first and then weight room and other facilities. Just because I know someone will call me out, it will be done by Suffolk Construction and goal is done by next season. Nothing will impact the ice for the season.
Suffolk Construction built the first LEED Platinum-certified hockey arena in the country.

Good god, stupidity on steroids. Promise you he’d make minimum $75k -$100k more per at BC with MUCH better perks. Compensation matters.

Who is disagreeing with you? No one.

You don't need to comment just to comment. This board already knows your proclivities and accepts your pathologies and shortcomings all the same.

Would still have a job if you performed as abysmally as MS7 for eight consecutive years? Doubt it.
What does this have to do with what I said? lol

Additionally, show me where I've said a specific player didn't deserve a scholarship. You can't because I've said no such thing.
Your back sore from moving the goalposts here? I don't think it matters if you said it about specific players. Why would they want a volunteer who said they collectively don't deserve their scholarships?

A few a have been public and transparent that UNH was their only option.

From what I'm hearing lately from pretty reliable sources, the situation behind the scenes with UNH Hockey is an absolute train wreck. I'm not in a position to reveal some of these tidbits - at least until I get some second source confirmations to back it up - but if even half of what I'm hearing is even close to accurate, it's going to take a massive overhaul of ALL aspects of UNH Hockey (including the now apparent short-timer AD) to get this ship righted. Totally dysfunctional.

I'm still here, pulling for the guys on the team, but they absolutely have their work cut out for them. I'm going to park the bus right here, and it'll stay parked for now.

I read this threasd everyday but never post on it
The main points are
Coach should be fired
University needs to invest more
Not mentioned is where both recruits and possible coaches regard UNH vs other teams
Outside of Vermont and merrimack not sure if UNH is above any other schools
It's a major problem with no easy solutions

There was a note some pages back about some STHs wanting to be treated like major University doners.

My reaction to that is, NOPE, most just want to be treated like the important customers they are. Most I meet see major doners as just that. They just don't want to be treated like crap by the Athletics department. Ages ago the University cared about there hockey community... then Blue Skies came along and the "average man" has been treated like dirt since. See ticket office employee "if you think the coaches is the problem you shouldn't renew".

Yes Universities aren't businesses and still the season ticket holders are customers not inconveniences and the program should act like it.

My response to that ticket office employee "if you can't have even basic customer service, go find another job".

P.S. Potluck I have been ignoring you, and will be resuming that after this note. If you are who we think you are, you are actually a representative of the University and you should act like one, that means not being a general @$$ because you think you have anonymity on a message board. What happened to to you, you get a little inside position just to become a jerk here, maybe you need to examine yourself.
