UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

Looks like UNH won the tourney the way they are celebrating but they deserved it. Maine on the other hand is in deep shit in regards to the team, hockey east, and the big picture

Northeastern just won in OT to move to 3rd. UNH is 4th. Maine, BU and Providence are tied for 5th, but the Friars have two games in hand.

UConn and BC are going to run away at the top.

I got shouted down when Maine swept BU, but Maine needs high end talent. Just one or two of those big top two round power forwards that can muscle their way to the net and make something happen. The overage/undersized/grinder combo leaves such little margin for error.

It wouldn't take an insane amount of money. Make the football team play another body-bag game and use the $300,000 payday to fund some hockey talent. The football program would be good for something for once.

This team is in deep trouble, as we all obviously know. I dont know what the answer is. They clearly woke up in the third, but for me all it did was make me realize how lazily they played in the second period. Boija made a few big stops but was still a net negative again. Rousseau should be the permanent starter going forward unless he really struggles or has an injury. Not to defend their uninspired play but its not ridiculous to say that Boija has cost them a few games this year. I keep thinking back to the Colgate loss in particular.

The vibes around this team are atrocious right now.

When they interviewed Freel in between periods he seemed quite down. He seemed that way last night in the post game interview. I’m guessing the mood of the team can’t be great when your captain has that low energy. And an assistant captain got benched for making costly turnovers. Lipinski got benched and he was the guy that had been doing well in front of the net early in the season and was scoring back then. Boija letting in softies is super deflating. Sort of a down hill plunge after that Vermont series. Hard to believe this team won 3 of 4 against BU and BC, but loses 3 of 4 against Vermont and UNH. The UNH and Vermont games were at Alfond. The BC series was away. Just a very inconsistent and unpredictable team. Now 8-7-1 looking quite average and not a NCAA playoff at large bid. Likely won’t host hockey east quarterfinal playoff game at home at this rate.

I've been wondering lately if the Bennett hire has backfired in some way. I have no evidence for that assertion whatsoever, but with how his tenure ended in Schenectady maybe it wasnt the right move?

Rousseau is in for the third period.

I’ll be honest that I wasn’t crazy about it but we don’t really know who else was in the mix and Barr obviously has a relationship with him from before.

I’m shocked how bad this weekend went. I would have put the mortgage on Maine winning at least one game.

First UNH weekend sweep in Orono on almost 20 years.

Hard to begrudge them a little overexuberance. This winning thingie is still a work in progress at Mike Souza's UNH ...

I doubt it. Sure didn't seem to have any negative impacts when he was at Q-Pac.

Again for the umpteenth time......WTF happened to the $6 million check that Greg Powell of the Alfond Foundation handed Ben Barr at the Alfond dedication ceremony?

Just axe the football program and replace it with lacrosse or soccer. That would free up plenty of cash to sign a few high end hockey players. Sadly, that will never happen.
