Boston College Women's Hockey '25-'26: It's The Hope That Kills You

Finally got approved for this site so wanted to share and introduce myself....

I'm the radio broadcaster for BC Women's Hockey and cover the team and women's college hockey for Boston College Eagles on SI and College Hockey on SI
Our broadcasts air free over twitter and/or YouTube (WZBCsports) ; we'll have all home games and as many road games as we can get to (most of them once football ends).
I'm a grad student at BC and do this as basically an unpaid volunteer since the team was getting next to zero media coverage at the start of last season; I won't be on all the games (Freelancing pays the bills for me, mostly for other schools ESPN+) but have a great group of undergrads to fill in for me when I'm elsewhere.
The NBC affiliate in Madison WI - WMTV - used to have a sports guy named Robb Vogel; he did play-by-play for lots of stuff, including some Badger men's and women's hockey. Any relation?

Yes, evidently when you have Hockey East player of the month, Ava Thomas, she helped propel BC to victory.

Back at it next week. We still don't have a schedule (a tradition unlike any other) but we do have an exhibition vs. Stonehill on Saturday 9/20 which will be fun. Lee-J brought Erin Connolly as assistant over there (!) so they're kind of a BC Lite over in North Easton.
Brown chicken brown cowwww 😎

:) Was a very good, much needed win.

Ava Thomas looks to be another potential BC superstar. My question is will she commit to staying at BC and try to help rebuild the program or will she join the long list of recent great BC players that decide to go elsewhere ( Pellerin, Jordan, Bilka, Barnes, Watts, Hartmetz, Guay, Norcross etc )

At some point we need to stop the bleeding. We are talking about Boston College !

This has nothing to do with anything other than she stinks at her job. Just brutal. Unacceptable at Boston College and I would say 98% of the people agree with me.
As usual, I find myself in the 2% demographic. And it's not because I think that she's some elite coach. The problem is that most NCAA coaches these days are competent, so it is difficult to lift a program up strictly via coaching brilliance. Look at some of the best coaches in the game and how many years they were in their position before they won their first NCAA tournament game. Your "brutal" certainly applied to her team the weekend that I watched them, but they have rebounded somewhat, so she must be doing something right. Do I think she should be fired? Nobody put me in charge of staffing the unemployment line, so I'll reserve my opinion on that one. I will say that she has a better record than the coach at UNH, which is a more legendary program in the world of women's hockey. Do I think she will lead BC to a title in my lifetime? I am awfully old ...

As for your other point, the majority of women's hockey coaches are nice, friendly people, even to reporters. That doesn't mean reporters become friends with them.

Lots of time left in this game at 5-2 BC but since Ava Thomas got ejected the Eagles have looked like monsters... so it's nice to see we seem to have some depth.

I feel like there has not been enough of a reaction to the return of RSTARR!!!!!!!!!! I am completely shook.

Sucks to BU right now.
reggiedunLap really wearing that L today lol
OK Guys - not sure why you are trying to poke the bear here after a sweep of BU but I'm grateful that you are thinking of me. Anyways..

Cmon Tony. Enough with the Kinger support. She is a disaster. She needs to retire soon or go coach high school somewhere. Its over. Hockey East is once again a National Embarrassment

Tara won a Hockey East Championship last year in her 2nd year. She and her staff all over the place with their recruiting. BU is on the way up. BC is another above average team that once again might have a chance at winning Hockey East but my bet is they have another weak 2nd half of the season.

I like Emma Conner. She works hard. I'm sure she is a great kid and a great teammate. Its not personal at all. But my question remains the same...Is that the best player Kinger could find with a full scholarship to play hockey at Boston College ?

Just another painful BCWIH loss last night to NU in a huge game in the Hockey East standings. I know I have posted BC s record against NU over the last 5-7 years but if you want to get depressed go look it up. Its actually so lopsided that you think its a misprint but its not.

I'm sorry but I really went to that game last night thinking we were finally ready to start punching NU back in the nose. Boy was I wrong. BC played hard but NU was just better. Way better. Shots were like 40 to 18 but NU had well over 60 shot attempts. BC has maybe 3-4 players that would make the NU team. And that might be high.

A few other observations.....

  • Campbell is tremendous, Gives them a chance every game. Fun to watch
  • Has anyone seen Sam Taber ? What the heck is going on with her? I assume she is hurt because she is a complete non factor
  • BC freshman are good and its not just Thomas. I like Murphy and Mara. Is Tony the Tiger gonna tell me to keep being patient and that Kinger has a plan and is " the right person for the job" ? Is it another rebuild season ? How many rebuilds can you have before you finally start winning ?
  • BC defense is terrible. Hard to watch at times. 13 should never been on the ice late in that game against the Lalond line. Whoever is running the BC defense needs to step aside and go run the forwards because that's basic coaching. Have your top D out against their top line who was dominant all game. its really not that complicated.
BC has to find a way to scratch out a win today @ NU or you might as well give NU the regular season trophy. I'm trying to stay positive here but its getting harder and harder watching this team do the same thing year after year. I will check in tomorrow.

That Sammy Taber goal today was ridiculous, now wasn't it?

Home from Boston. Super fun game and played well enough in the third to win but couldn't capitalize on the chances and NU turned the screws late. Bummer but encouraging effort I thought.

I have to get a clip of the NU player who went down like a sack of bricks in the corner after the whistle after getting tapped in the chest. One of the funniest flops I have ever witnessed. Have some self-respect, ma'am.

Yeah agreed, she's turned it on especially lately. I think she was either WHEA or national goalie of the month for November or something?
  • Has anyone seen Sam Taber ? What the heck is going on with her? I assume she is hurt because she is a complete non factor
You have to admit it is pretty funny that every time you've called someone out lately they've immediately given you a rebuttal lol

Sick goal today for those who missed it:

Also for what it's worth I wouldn't agree that she's been a nonfactor; I've felt her chemistry with Thomas has been great and they've been real good together.

Not a freshman but Tremblay is a ROCK SOLID player. Really really enjoy her game and she stood out this weekend in particular for me.

Agree with the other freshmen being nice adds. Thomas is just a capital D Dawg though, man; what an absolute thunderbolt. I swear she plays 45 minutes a game, too.

Idk, they block a *ton* of shots. Not really their usual M.O. but it has worked for me. I definitely wouldn't say it's hard to watch but that's just my opinion. They aren't as irresponsible throwing bodies forward as they have been in the past but they also don't have the personnel to do that anymore anyway.

Lastly, a small throwback for those of you who have known Joe and me from nearly 20 years of this. Dug out my old BC blanket we used to use as a banner while we were students and brought it to the last ever game at Matthews today. Fun little callback to the before-time in the long-long-ago...

A game from freshman year 2006, and today:
