TV 20 - Sorry no fancy title

I've never been a fan of the "guests" on Weekend Update. Coincidental or not, I thought this weekend's without any guests was the strongest in a long, long time. Just straight jokes for five minutes. Though the news of the week may have helped play into that.

I just watched the Pediatric Oncologist episode of The Studio. The juxtaposition of Seth Rogan's character being on the phone talking about a movie trailer with explosive diarrhea in it, while his girlfriend's doctor character right next to him is talking to a child's mother about cancer treatment after Seth described what they both do as "very serious" was brilliant.

They vary wildly. Sometimes there is great chemistry. Sometimes it is just interminable dumb shit.

It's a live show. They never know what is gonna land.

Some of them are some of the best "bits" they've ever had. Stefon for example.

There have been some good ones. Stefon, Drunk Uncle, but other times they’ll have a random throwaway like Man Looking for Chapstick in a Corner Store (not a real character) and I just wonder how it ever passed as good enough in the pitch meeting.

Well, comedy is like mud. You throw enough at the wall and some of it is going to stick.

A lot of times it's "let the new cast member do the character they've been working on their whole life to see if it's any good".

The Studio is on my list. Never been the biggest fan of Seth Rogen, but really liked his acceptance speeches when The Studio won several Emmys. And then last week, during my company's monthly Caregivers of Aging Parents Coffee Chat, we saw a documentary he made called Taking Care about his wife' journey when her mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in her early 50s. It really changed my view of him. For anyone going thru dealing with a parent with Alzheimer's, I highly recommend checking it out. It's so well done. I believe it's on Amazon Prime. Or maybe Hulu.

If you find him tolerable enough to make it through The Studio I'd recommend another series of his Platonic with Rose Byrne.

Speaking of SNL, Marcello Hernández is their best new talent in at least a decade. He is starting to remind me of Steve Martin. Comes on the scene with what look like limited, niche characters played for low ball laughs, but the more of him you see the more you realize oh shit this person really has depth and breadth.
