UNH- How Far West Do We Go?

Chauvette has allowed 8 goals total in the last 5 games. The story thus far has been a lack of goal scoring. Keep in mind Meathead, Buford and Elwood alleged Conmy was a problem on last years team. They claim he played lousy defense and was a problem in the locker room. Conmy likely would have given UNH 15-20 goals.
Well, sadly, this post did not age well for Chauvette.

But, could not agree more that the Cats miss Conmy’s goal scoring.

HR, you may get your wish for seeing da Whale in net during your road trip next weekend.

Well tonight was 6. Would Conmy have scored 6 to win the game? BC won 5-0 against VT and here boy had no points and 1 shot

Can someone explain to me why after the 3rd goal he did not put Whale in? His fault or not you have to do something.

Gotta say say that when UNH gets drubbed by UML it pretty much went like this tonight. I think I've seen us lose 8-2 at least twice to them in my tenure as a fan. Welp..complete break down here's hoping they pull it together for the coming weekend's trip to the Empire state.

UNH has played four two game weekends, three of which have been a weekend series against the same teams. Each followed the same pattern. UNH won the first game and lost the second.

Immaturity? Poor coaching? Both?

Cats must break this trend and sweep this coming weekend against two cupcakes in New York.

Can we get a "where are they now" update on Eddie Caron?
Ask and ye shall receive ... at last sighting, the former "Hamlet of New Hampshire", infamous for his epic indecision between playing for State U or chasing love in the Ivies down at Yale shortly after the turn of the century, the "Edmonton Express" (lol) seems to have found his footing in the real world, after quitting UNH Hockey, and one solidly unspectacular pro season playing in the 'Coast League. In an upset of minor proportions, "Leadfoot Ed" returned to UNH to finish his undergrad studies a couple years later, and after stints in CT and Downeast Maine (!) early in his work career, he spent 10 years in the C-suite of a national data management outfit, and parlayed that into his current position with a global consulting firm, where he is based in the Twin Cities. So it seems he is doing well.

While on the subject ... Adam Pineault, the Pride of Holyoke MA, who was once favorably compared by one of the recruiting fanatics at Bandwagon Nation as "the next Sydney Crosby", left Chestnut Hill after a single season of sub-Caron production, and played two more seasons of junior hockey in Quebec - kinda like the Warren Foegele route to the big time - and eventually signed with Columbus, where he played three (3) scoreless games and impressed the organization so much with a -2 plus/minus that he was immediately returned to the AHL, where he would be dealt midway through the next season to the CBH organization. They thought so much of their new acquisition that they released him at the end of that season. Two seasons in Europe and 3 in the low minors brought his hockey dreams to an end. Pineault is now working in the Tampa Bay area selling operating room supplies, and (not kidding) training to become a firefighter.

I'm going split too, but the other way around, they win a UML 3-1 and lose at home 5-3.
This was probably the best prediction of the bunch for this weekend's results. Kudos!

As to the emerging "win one, lose one" trend that is developing with this year's team, one possibility that has to at least be considered is whether asking your starting goalie to play back-to-backs every weekend is a smart thing? Not to absolve the relative inexperience of the team, or the (in)abilities of the coaching staff ... but at some point, don't you have to at least test out the possibility that KC can be more effective if he gets to focus on one game, and then Whale can spell him for the second game with a fresh, different look for the opposition?? This isn't rocket science or brain surgery, that would be something that I'd be taking a look at in the coming weekend(s), if only to rule that possibility out. Making the same decision and expecting different results ... not terribly bright stuff. Just sayin' ...

First off...let's consider the penalties...and kudos to our PK team for the work they've done so far...can't have 4 penalties in one period. Regardless of this...UNH while generating some good chances absolutely did not play like a team who knew what was coming at them.

I mean....UML plays a very basic systematic game of breakouts etc? Who among us didnt have flashbacks to the glory days of tic tac toe scoring they are famous for? Saw alot of that in the days of CJSmith and co.

Honestly? I could see it in the warmup and said as much to Mr.HR. Something about the business like way UML took to the ice. Also in checking their record they are a .500 club. We should have played better as we sort of lucked out Friday despite a stellar game for KC and his PK boys...

Trying to find the bright spots...still winning at the dot and the all-important SOG's UML had 2 stinger goals...took advantage of our obvious lapses and of course forchecked the devil out of us. Norm always throws the trap you'd think we would have had a PLAN for that or is this team not able to do such tasks?

Has to be frustrating but they've gotta figure it out. Just make my trip to ECAC land worth it!!

But, you were fine with Danny Tirone starting nearly every game in his last three seasons (2015/16-2017/18, 105 games; 6180 mins; 9-19-6, 3.19, 0.907; 15-18-5, 2.99, 0.910; 10-17-6, 2.68, 0.917), right? Tirone split time in net his first year (20 games, 14-6, 2.14, 0.924) with Adam Clark (1-Adam-12), arguably Tyrone’s best season. But, wow those were bad UNH teams at the close of the Umile Era.

Wonder how things might have gone for that rotation of Clark had not gotten injured...also Jamie Regan getting the start at the Notre Dame series...getting a W. I think Whale gets a start Friday...

In all fairness, Michigan State and Quinnipiac are far more superior teams than UNH. However, I agree and I was hoping for better against fellow HEA bottom feeders Merrimack, UVM, and UMass-Bazin. Fortunately, we have more OOC games against cupcakes on the near horizon. Yum, yum, yum!

Funny...I just made some cupcakes today celebrate our upcoming games lol

That's a fair point Snives, so let me differentiate the two situations a bit. At the start of the 2014/2015 season, Umile's plan was to ride Casey DeSmith as the lead goalie, a job he had earned by out playing Matt DiGirolamo (sp?) in CDS' frosh season, and continued as the lead dog over the next two seasons, backed up by the rarely used Jeff Wyer, with Jamie Regan as the #3 guy in what turned out to be CDS' final season in Titletown. The original UNH plan for 2014/2015 was for Adam Clark to step in as the #2 goalie behind CDS, replacing Wyer. Then Labor Day Weekend happened, and CDS was out of the picture, leaving Umile with Clark as the (unexpected) #1, and Regan bumped up to #2. Tirone was originally slotted in as the #1 for the following season after CDS' anticipated graduation, so he was not enrolled at UNH for the start of the 2014/2015 season. Tirone was then enrolled for the second semester, and at the break UNH was not doing terribly well, several games under .500 and Clark, while performing admirably under the circumstances, was no Casey DeSmith. So Tirone came in after the break, and provided much-improved goaltending, bringing UNH back up to at or near .500. UNH swept UConn in the MBPBEGAM round, and then stunned Providence in the quarters to advance to the Garden, where (in their last visit to the facility) they lost to eventual champs BU (and Jack Eichel) in the semis.

In that season where you describe Tirone and Clark as "splitting time", the only "split" was that Clark played most/all of the games pre-Tirone, and Tirone got all of the starts when he arrived at midseason. Which was apparently how Coach Umile expected things to be the following few seasons. Tirone fell short of CDS, but he's been the best UNH goalie since CDS (including Hellsten two seasons ago). Tirone unfortunately played behind late stage Umile era teams those final 3 seasons, which were pretty terrible. I don't recall there being an issue with Tirone wilting on the second games of a weekend series, and I don't believe there was any indication that he crumbled late in the season due to overwork. My clear recollection is that coming out of the break that final Umile season (also Tirone's last), with everyone well rested, the 'Cats inexplicably went on an extended losing streak that cost Coach Umile his shot at the NRN, just when it seemed he couldn't possibly fall short.

Looking at Chauvette and Whale in their pre-UNH D-1 seasons ... Chauvette (the NH kid) came home after two years of being the regular starter at Union, and this will be his fourth and final year of D-1 eligibility (I believe?) with him now being the go-to guy at UNH. Whale was a back-up in his frosh season at UAA and took the reins as the 1A goalie as a soph, before coming over to UNH as the go-to guy last season to replace Hellsten, who returned to Sweden relatively late in the offseason. Whale's pre-UNH numbers are slightly better than KC's numbers (looking at save pct.) although Chauvette's early UNH numbers this season are superior to Whale's UNH numbers last season. If Whale doesn't get steamrolled at BC last season, would KC even be here? I don't know that answer.

Coaches always know more than they let on to the public, and one possibility that hasn't been raised to date is whether Whale might not be entirely cleared to resume full speed, real game action? I'm assuming both he and #3 guy Kristian Coombs have been dressing as back-ups for the first 9 games, no? I'm not up to speed on the current "redshirt" rules, but it's possible that Souza is gonna ride Chauvette all season long, and use Coombs as an emergency back-up, with the possibility of having Whale return for a shot at #1 next season - unless KC falters or gets hurt?? I'm not on top of the current recruiting, one of the casualties of 'Watcher spending his free time elsewhere these days, so I don't know if that makes any sense, especially for a program that has gone with different transfer goalies in each of the last three seasons? Long term planning for that position seems to have gone south since Drew Commesso.

However you look at it, the case of the missing Whale is curious, and arguably getting curiouser by each weekend that passes without him taking the ice ...
