This was my first time to watch BC live in person since ... the 2015 FF maybe? I guess they are still playing the same basic style of be aggressive, force turnovers, and capitalize. Defend? Hey, we wasted one of our six players by having a goalie, and we aren't sacrificing any more offensive capability than that.
UM was constantly handling the puck just inside its O blue line, and the Eagles pressured hard. Harder than any opponent in recent memory. tOSU has feasted on such plays, but the Buckeyes pick and choose, and surprise with sudden pressure. Wisconsin takes away time and space better than anyone, but the Badgers want to stay on the right side of the puck and are always prepared to get back into a defensive posture. BC's objective looked to be to create odd-player rushes, and it did, but it wasn't able to execute them all the way up the ice.
It took the Eagles more than 28 minutes to get their first shot on goal, and it wasn't because UM was playing lockdown defense. All of their advantages just kind of fizzled away. In the meantime, the D whom BC was pressuring stepped around them more often than not and created disadvantages that the Eagles struggled to sort out. Campbell actually played pretty well for a goalie with 5 goals against her on the first 20 shots.
The underdog teams in WCHA understand their cause well. Defend at all costs, keep the game close, try to frustrate the favorite, wait for the mistakes, and do something with them when they happen. BC still plays like it is the favorite.
