CHL to NCAA Recruiting Megathread

3-2 OT London over Moncton

Sam O'Reilly opens the game and ends it. shots ended up 48-29, both teams go 1/3 on power plays. Moncton roster owes Rousseau a steak and a few beers. Also a standout for Moncton is Markus Vidicek (Quinnipiac), no points for his effort but 18/29 on faceoffs and had 6 shots, 4 of which were dangerous. Big reason why they were much better than London in the dot.

Also- Memorial Cup OT is the whole 20 minutes but it's 3-on-3 the entire time. a few just barely avoided too many men calls for both sides.
Defensemen Dickinson doesn’t look far off from the NHL.
God I hope so, don't know what else he could achieve at the OHL level but he isn't eligible for the AHL yet. I was worried all the good defensemen would be gone by the time the Sharks had their 2nd pick in the 1st round, couldn't believe he was still there at 11.

London has a quick turn around, meets Rimouski same time tomorrow.

I believe that NIL is essentially going away and being replaced with revenue sharing for football and basketball. Any NIL deals have to go through a NCAA clearing house for approval if the amount is over $600. The NIL fund will be run by the schools not outside collectives. Schools that opted in to the pay system can have 26 full scholarship rosters. Teams that do not opt in are limited to 18 scholarships, but no roster limits. Revenue sharing is not subject to title IX requirements.

Go Eagles 🦅

Final score 3-1 London, shots 36 London- 29 Rimouski. Shot differential might have been worse if London hadn't evidently forgotten how to put the puck on the net for some lengths of time.

Rimouski had 4 power plays, London had 1. Knights mightve had flashbacks to OHL Finals Game 1, but their PK went perfectly unlike that one. Faceoffs still killing the Knights a bit, the only player above 50% is Halttunen... who is a winger, went 2/2. Dale Hunter passes Don Hay for sole possession of all-time wins at the Memorial Cup by a head coach after tying him yesterday.

Luke Coughlin (Maine) looked good despite the losing effort. Mathieu (Northeastern) and Fauchon (Providence) both had a tough time getting great shots, none of theirs were counted as dangerous. Elliott (UML) had to make a few key saves, including one wicked one on the pk where he somehow saw the puck despite having all of 6'6 209lb Eriks Mateiko right in his line of vision. After 2 games, Elliott has .948 save% and 1.45 GAA.

With Barkey back in a regular role, EVG (Maine) was put back to 4C but he's definitely used a lot more than the other 4th liners. When Dale put lines in the blender in the 3rd, he seemed to like a combo of Cowan-Julien-EVG.

London is now at worst in the semi-finals, could win the auto-bid to the finals depending on remaining games.

Moncton and Medicine Hat go tomorrow at 7pm ET

As we get down to the matchup of eternal cat-related puns, we have a few more USports transfers coming in.

Miami picks up G Matteo Drobac and D Owen Lalonde. Drobac played 1 year at University of Western Ontario, was in the USports All-Rookie team. His junior career was up and down, lost his rookie season to COVID, started promisingly in his rookie season but was on a bad Hamilton Bulldogs team. He holds the records for Bulldogs' all-time wins and shutouts. His numbers at Western are very promising despite a few tough seasons with the Bulldogs. Owen Lalonde had 4 years at Queens University, probably only 1 year of eligibility remaining. Lots of young players coming in, a veteran on the blue line should be a big help.

Also, Cayden Lindstrom is back in the lineup for Medicine Hat.

After winning a Clark Cup, Muskegon head coach Parker Burgess is reportedly going to the Edmonton Oil Kings of WHL next. Continuing that thought....

Edmonton Oil Kings signs 07 F Andrew O'Neill, UND commit from NTDP. Notably played with current Oil Kings defenseman Blake Fiddler at U18s, both are draft eligible. Joins that trend of NTDP alum getting one more year of junior hockey.

So a guy can play 4 seasons of USports and still have a year of eligibility for NCAA hockey? Odd

60 minutes of gametime and a million cat puns later, Medicine Hat wins 3-1 over Moncton.

Shots were 41-22 Medicine Hat, power plays 2/5 and 0/2. Ryder Ritchie had a 3 point game. Felt like Moncton lost their confidence. Desnoyers has been snake bitten, on a major drought at the worst possible time. Vidicek (Quinnipiac) was one of their most effective forwards. Both goalies made difficult saves, Rousseau was busier, especially in the 2nd period. The real killer was pulling their goalie and taking a too many men penalty (as in, 7 players on the ice) at 18:38 of the 3rd. absolutely killed their ability to push for the tie. Uncharacteristic mistake from a good team with a veteran coach.

Lindstrom (Michigan State) looked great, no points but was a great screen for one of Ritchie's goals. Notably he took regular faceoffs, going 6/11. Gavin McKenna had the empty net goal and one assist.

Feel bad for both Moncton and Rimouski, but it was what I had predicted myself.

Tomorrow's London/Medicine Hat game is to decide who gets the auto-bid to the finals., and the Q finals rematch becomes who stays alive.

I thought Medicine Hat and London looked stronger heading into this too. Looking forward to these next couple games. It is a great format, a game every day for the fans.

Medicine Hat beats London 3-1 with the empty netter. Every game has been a 1 goal game or 1 goal plus empty netter.

Shot favor London 36-29, faceoffs also London 37-23. London 1/3 on power plays, MH 0/3.

Tough night for London's first line, felt like they just weren't clicking quite right- especially Sam O'Reilly. Kept missing on shots or not getting enough on it and ended up overthinking it as the game went on, 8 shots 2 were dangerous. They did a mostly good job of containing Gavin McKenna- I think they just stuck Oliver Bonk onto him and that's not a bad game plan. The communication also was off. There was one moment where Sam Dickinson was coming in, was screaming to Jacob Julien that he was going to pass to him, and somehow Julien didn't process it until the puck was at his feet. EVG (Maine) went 4/4 on faceoffs.

Medicine Hat got their 2 goals from lower down their lineup, Ethan Neutens with one and Mathew Ward (Northern Michigan) with the other. Cayden Lindstrom (Michigan State) did play the back-to-back, but he did not play the 3rd period- might be some of that load management, went 2/6 on faceoffs. He tried to hit Sam Dickinson during one of Medicine Hat's power plays and kinda just bounced off him. Lindstrom has an inch on Dickinson and profiles say 20 lbs, but he's likely still building strength back up, and Dickinson could've gained some muscle since his profile was updated.

Harrison Meneghin played great. Austin Elliott (UML)... I'll quote this tweet from Cape Breton Eagles pxp Patrick McNeil, who is at the tournament-
I feel like many of Austin Elliot's saves could be highlight reel but he puts himself in position where he doesn't have to make the big stop.
Great systems goaltender, very calm in net.

Medicine Hat punches their ticket to the finals, and London awaits the QMJHL finals rematch tomorrow night to see who they will face in the semi-finals.

I don't mind London not getting the bye. Last year, they had that after sweeping the round robin games handedly, only to come out in the finals game looking like crap. Almost salvaged it by forcing OT, then the goal with 20 seconds left... Might benefit them in the long term.

Julien is a bit goofy at times. He should always be watching for the puck and making himself available for the pass. If he pays attention there he might have been sprung for a breakaway attempt or had to be hooked turning into a power play. I think Julien often makes bad decisions in his positioning. He does do well in neutral zone disrupting the other teams passes and puck lugging with his stick which seems 12 ft long somehow at times.

Meneghin was the difference tonight, was a rock wall. Was very good teams tonight and likely who we will see in the finals.

I really like this format. Whichever team loses goes home as they should for not being able to beat any of the other teams. The team that hasn’t lost gets to go to the finals. The other two Duke it out to see who gets to be in the finals. And it’s 8 days in a row of hockey.

Some high-end player rumors:

F Ryder Ritchie: unofficially locked to BU. Current Medicine Hat Tiger, leads Memorial Cup with 4 goals. I thought Minnesota had already signed Ryder Ritchie to his ELC, but it looks like he hasn't.
F Cole Reschny: was considered an almost sure thing for BC, UND has come up as a potential suitor. Victoria Royals, elite playmaker, 2025 NHL draft projected 1st round.
G Jack Ivankovic: likely going to Michigan, Schlossman mentioned on a recent podcast. Brampton Steelheads, 2025 NHL draft projected 1st round.

Commits:

05 F Cole Miller of Edmonton Oil Kings to Canisius

Not a new commit, but I don't think I mentioned it already: G Tyler Palmer from University of Alberta is transferring to BGSU. Former Everett Silvertip, and most interestingly, an Edmonton Oilers EBUG this year. Signed a single day tryout in late January when Stuart Skinner was on paternity leave, sat as backup to Calvin Pickard. Basically took warmups and sat on the bench for one game. With the Golden Bears, he went 13-4-1, .915 save % 2.11 GAA, playoffs 3-2-1 1.75 .936.

Moncton beats Rimouski 6-2. Goals 5 and 6 were empty net. Both teams played desperate, as they should. Rimouski nearly tripled Moncton's shots in period 1, but were only up 2-1. Moncton woke up and almost all of their shots were dangerous. Rousseau outplayed Langevin just a bit.

Rimouski's depth was getting them good momentum but they couldn't convert. Thomas Belzil (UMass) had 3 shots, 2 dangerous, also 4/5 on faceoffs. Luke Coughlin (Maine) had one great chance in the 3rd that Rousseau ended up saving. Mathieu (Northeastern) only had one shot, 7/13 on faceoffs.

Moncton looked much more confident. After the Medicine Hat game, Gardiner MacDougall said he was informed shortly before the game that his son's (aka Moncton's GM) father in law had passed away. He didn't tell the team until after, but he mentioned it was the hardest game he's ever had to coach. Certainly might explain the too many men penalty, which is largely considered a coaches responsibility.

Markus Vidicek (Quinnipiac) had a solid game, no points though. 13/25 on faceoffs and 4 shots. Still no points for Desnoyers, but he had 3 dangerous shots. 08 F Gabe Smith (UTA draft pick) had a 4 point game.

Moncton gets a spot in the semi-final vs London Friday night. Rimouski is eliminated despite some great efforts.

Additionally, Palmer played for Dennis Williams when both were in Everett so there’s some history there. The BG goalie room now consists of returning junior Cole Moore along with Palmer and QMJHL recruit Jacob Steinman.

Coughlin also had some blunders. Twice trying to hard for stretch passes that went for icing. He also whiffed chipping out a puck and turned it over to center ice, which shot went wide and off the end boards, then he didn’t get in the way of the puck and whiffed on a clearing attempt, which wound up in front of the net where Moncton tee off on it and into the net for the 3rd goal. I think this was a bad game for him compared to the other times I’ve seen him.

I think Rousseau was great again. He is a difference maker. Not sure though it will be enough against London. London has very good depth on their lines, Dickinson is the best player on the ice usually, and Elliot is very solid in net. London cycles well and like to possess the puck down low. So going to be tough for Moncton to beat them I think.

Very much looking forward to these next two games.
