University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply otherwise. I agree that NIL $$ should be carefully considered. I'm simply of the opinion that these deals will only be lucrative for a very few players. And that the vast majority of athletes who get deals will only be buying some clothes and a few rounds of bevvies. I don't believe there is massive value to a business to sign a player as a spokesmodel. We are in a honeymoon time right now where everybody is trying to figure it out. I think once businesses really see what NIL deals are worth, there won't be buckets of cash being passed around.
Totally agree, and no offense taken to your previous post.

Have the captains already been chosen for next year?

I’m guessing Freel wears the C?

Holt deserves at least an A also.

Boija should get an A, he shows a lot of emotion.

Thoughts?

Coach Barr will be a guest on “The Nite Show” at 11:30 PM on WABI-5 in Bangor. It will be on At 10:30 PM on Fox23 in Portland. It will be on at 11 PM on NBC16 in Presque Isle. And also on at 1 AM on WGME in Portland. I imagine there will be a YouTube posted on their YouTube channel sometime after the broadcast.

I think Freel and Holt share the C. Assuming 3 As, I would guess Chabrier and Nadeau, with maybe Boija or Fowler.

Your "honeymoon" comment is, sadly, spot-on, IMO. This is just getting started, as you implied.

Hard to imagine that Maine can offer anywhere near the same amount of cash as the bigger schools will, once those deep-pocket schools decide how to parse it out.

Next year might be OK, but down the road..? Hard to see many top-shelf recruits considering playing in Orono.

Well part of the settlement will be revenue sharing. So right there we will be ahead of Providence. 🤣

Seriously though, I think Maine should do well since the whole state follows Maine. Should grow over time with more exposure to fan base and donars.

This seems overly pessimistic. American born first round draft picks are getting roughly 100k/year, and foreign players on a student visa aren't able to receive anything (although it seems like this is changing or they're getting different visas). There aren't any schools/NIL collectives spending a million a year for players even during this honeymoon period. As others have mentioned revenue sharing, which is completely separate from NIL allows schools to pay up to 21 million/year to student athletes directly from the school. The schools that have revenue to share generally have large football/basketball programs that will take most of that money. Not that they'll come close to maxing out 21 million, but schools like Maine, BU, NoDak where hockey is #1 will be able to spend the majority of their revenue sharing on hockey.

Even if you assume Maine never lands another top shelf Canadian like Brad Nadeau again, revenue sharing could make a huge difference. Maine played 19 regular season home games last year, say they raise ticket prices by an average of $5 for 4,500 seats per game that's $427,500/year. Hypothetically they could go out and buy 4 high level players per year without taking a penny away from current revenue. I'm not saying that's going to happen, but I don't think Maine will have problems attracting the right high level talent for their system. I don't think we'll ever see Maine teams with 10+ draft picks and several players from the USNTDP, but I think with the recent renovations, CHL expansion and revenue sharing (assuming Maine opts in) I think we're going to start seeing Maine teams with 5+ draft picks and a couple top 3 round players each year.

Season ticket renewals begin 10AM on Tuesday and will run through 27 June. STH will also have the opportunity to purchase tickets for the home playoff game when they renew. Those tickets sold out in a few minutes last month.

Will Title nine make it so if you pay men will you also have to pay women NIL money
I think revenue sharing is different than the awarding of scholarships. My guess is that you will see it sport dependent sharing rather than gender dependent. So men’s hockey will share in the rewards on Men hockey revenue. Women’s hockey will share in the revenue of women’s hockey. My guess is that is why you saw women’s begin to charge for the tickets and now have season tickets. Have to charge to even have revenue to take a share of to return to women’s hockey, even if it is small. It is a start though.
