UML Recruiting: Finally in the 20s!

UMass Lowell has received a commitment from Niagara University transfer Jay Ahearn. The left-shot forward had 19 goals and 20 assists in 36 games for the Purple Eagles last year and has 1 YOE remaining. Mike McMahon currently has Ahearn rated as the fifth-best forward in the portal.

Good get. He’s a two time captain and will be 24 next time he hits the ice. Lowell will need his leadership as well as his goal scoring ability.

That’s great news. I don’t feel like the AHA stats translate, but 39 pts is alot. If he gets even half that he replaces Scout

Interesting quote from that Sun article:
As of now, Bazin plans to bring in eight new players for UML’s 2025-26 team. Of those committed players, six served as a captain or assistant captain of their team. The majority of the incoming class will arrive at UML from the Canadian Hockey League.
We have 4 incoming players from Major Junior, as well as Ahearn from Niagara. Defensemen August Classon and James Johnson are both '04s so they have to come in this season. So there's 7. So does that mean out of the remaining 14 commits, only one more will come in? We have 5 2005 commits in that list.

I would think Norm would have to bring in at least 11 new players. At the moment with the current returning players, plus the 4 Major Junior players along with Classon, Johnson and Ahearn the roster sits at 23 (13 F, 7 D, 3 G). At a minimum 2 forwards (Romeo and Dyer?) and another defenseman (Kroll?) is needed. Will they bring in more players or is Norm going with a roster size of 26? Will there be more portal departures?

I'll try and update the 2025 class by this weekend, and see where we are. If we only lose four players to the portal, it's not that bad.

Bored at work today, so put this roster view together now that we know what the upcoming roster is like, I wanted to see where we are going out another two years. Obviously things will change based on future commits as well as the transfer portal.

But looking at the 25/26 roster, we'll definitely need to add at least one defenseman and a goalie.

Last did this in November, and quite a few changes have happened since then. So please correct me if I missed something. I understand very well that when I first started doing this, it made a lot more sense but now with the portal and the Major Junior players it's tougher to figure out the classes since it changes so much. But what the hell...

I'm speculating on some of this, based off Coach Bazin's comments on only expecting 8 new players in 2025 (as of now). This is also based on all the seniors not returning, but obviously that could change if anyone wants to play their grad year here. I agree with Bob's comment earlier, that 8 seems too low based off what is listed below for 2025/2026.

Do any of the seniors from 2024-25 have grad eligibility? I thought this past season was the last year of COVID seniors.

My only guess would be Nordlund because he went a full year without playing. Tate Brandon also falls into this category even though he's a grad student, and neither of them would appear likely to play next year anyway

Don't know the answer to your question, but if I remember correctly, Nordlund left school after graduating early and took a finance job with a startup in NY.
