University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

There are only two game threes today. As soon as the CC/DU game goes final the pairwise predictor should go live and we can start seeing potential matchups for the national tournament. Maine should be the top seed in Allentown with a BTHC or autobid opponent. But there is still a chance North Dakota and Western Michigan louse that up and Maine has to go to Fargo to play UND...

Is Maine not stuck with Penn State regardless or are assuming they remain a 3 seed?

Probably their most complete game since the second Denver game last night. Great win to the send out the seniors and so happy for Breen to get on the board.

Happy for my own viewing purposes that we’re playing the late game but seems strange that the highest seed wouldn’t get the longer layoff if they win. I expect that BU vs UConn game to be a war so let’s hope there is no overtime. Given how small both of their fan bases are, not surprised we got flexed into primetime.

Maine will likely play Pedo State, since they are hosting. However, PSU could move up to a 3-seed if Quinnipiac falters in the ECAC tournament. In that case, Maine would get either Quinnipiac, Michigan or a third autobid team. Maine can still get sent to Fargo if the cards fall wrong.

Also, because Maine is playing Northeastern and not BU in the semifinals, a loss to the Huskies would kill Maine's RPI and knock the Black Bears from a top seed. A loss to BU would not have hurt Maine that much. If Maine ends up a 2 seed the Bears probably end up in Fargo playing someone like Denver or Ohio State.

But we'll have a better idea in about 12 hours.

The boston team influence with HE admin.??
Bingo. HE giving BU (or UConn if they win) a huge advantage of more rest for Friday's game. Imagine an OT game making the start time around 8 or 8:30.....then Maine's game going to OT....could have a midnight ending then turn around and literally play on the same day about 18 hours later. But some Maine fans want that because they can't get out of work, catch the train, blah blah blah......crazy.

Are we really worried about 3 to 4 hours by playing later?

The commissioner, Steve Metcalf, is a UNH grad.

The associate commissioners Brian Smith and Kate Mcafee are a BC and UNH grad, respectively.

The supervisor of men’s officials Brian Murphy is a UNH grad.

Don’t think for a second the front office of hockey east like Maine.

The effects of playing the late vs early game at this time of year are overstated. Players at this point are used to playing games on short rest. The exception would be if a team has to play multiple overtimes. Even then, a 400 vs a 730 start aren't that different.

If anything, the real effect of playing the late game is if the early game goes to OT and all your preparations go out the window because you have no idea when you'll be playing. Your internal clock gets all screwed up.

The ticket link is live and seats are going fast.

Why can't I remember a time where the 1 seed played the late game?

Off the top of my head I can't think of one.

As for the concern being TV ratings for NESN... um...2023. The early game was #1 Boston University vs Providence and the primetime game featured a matchup of those two ratings juggernauts from Merrimack and Lowell.

Its not that the 3-4 hours matter, its that the pattern has changed all of a sudden. If the highest seed played the late game every other year based on travel and ratings, no one would bat an eye. That this seems to the only one anyone can rememebr is what has people asking, uhhh wut?

I’m sure the league office doesnt dislike Maine, either, because Maine brings $$$ and everyone likes $$$

Who decides the game time? It is rumored that Larry Mahoney said on radio that Maine would get the choice of game time. So this implies Barr chose the late game. Is this true? Or is it chosen without any regard to the wishes of the coach of the top seed?

The Pairwise tool is up and running.

All higher seeds win

Allentown
#3 Maine vs Pedo State
Boston University vs Denver

All favorites win except Northeastern defeats BU for Hockey East

Fargo
#4 Minnesota vs Minn State
Maine vs UMass
All #2 seeds are from Hockey East so an intraconference matchup with UMass is inevitable for someone...

All favorites except BU > Maine in Hockey East

Allentown
#4 Boston University vs Pedo State
Maine vs Denver

NU > BU
ASU > UND

Allentown
#4 Maine vs Arizona State
BU vs Denver
3 autobids; Pedo State does not make the tournament

Western Michigan loses to North Dakota, Maine advances to HEF and all other favorites win = 3 Hockey East #1 seeds
If UConn/BU - #4 Maine in Fargo vs NCHC Champ or Minn State
If Maine - #3 Maine in Allentown vs Pedo State

The "Parlay" - all tournament winners are outside the field = cut line 11

Allentown
#4 Maine vs ECAC Champ
W Mich vs UMass

(will edit as I do new scenarios)
