UMass Lowell 2024-2025 Season: Expectations are.....Expectations

Pairwise is indeed all that matters, but interestingly, Lowell's SOS is actually higher than Providence. Lowell is currently 5th in SOS.

Lineup for tonight's game. Mirko Buttazzoni is back. Libor Nemec is still out.

Lowell did not have a shot on goal in the 2nd period last night. That is the 1st time in program history they went an entire period without a shot on goal. There have been 3 previous times where they only had 1 shot on goal in a period.

Finally got my account out of hock...

OK... for what i watched last night. I don't know how we're as high as we are in the pairwise... yes i know the math. I feel like every game against a good team including providence we've just been getting away with it and last night exposed a lot of it. We make a lot of very poor defensive decisions and I don't know if that's the players of this era or if that's just us. After that we just don't have the speed to keep up with these guys for the most part. I would take our 2012 team against this group and I'd feel very comfortable about it. Our 2013 team wins by 5.

What I really think is that this group has to learn a lot... and I don't think there's time to do it... but rather its the learning that comes with time and will have to be learned/relearned through successive classes. I don't know what our warm body situation looks like for next year, how much we lose, but I'd like to think things could come together a lot better next year.

Where we go from here? Look, we've found ways so far. With the lighter schedule the margins will be somewhat less thin. Keep scrapping and they'll find a way. However, if this team wants any march success it will have to learn to make more solid choices with more confidence. I feel like this team is a collection of things here that somehow works and not a dedicated system that does work.

so... I put in a pessimist version of the remaining results into CHN's pairwise calculator... W Vermont, L UConn, L Providence, Split UMass, 0-1-1 New Hampshire, split NU and we remain in about the same position we're in right now. Eleventh in the pairwise, obvious the world will move around us as well but it seems we have a bit of a buffer if we go 3-5-1. If we win out we only get as high as 5 with Maine being in our way.

Of course the teams immediately below us in such a situation are one good win from jumping on us so coasting will not work.

late edit: We are 3 losses up on Quinnipiac right now.... that is to say we could lose the next 3 games and not drop. I expect QU to start piling up wins but if we took three losses we would still be in front as of today.

After a hot start to the season, Lowell has now gone 11 games without scoring more than 3 goals. The last time was November 30th (2 months plus now) Lowell scored 4 against Clarkson.

maybe I'm totally wrong on this but when we play a team like BC I often want us to try taking opportunistic shots and hope they go in more than trying to get to high chance areas. Maybe I incorrectly remember past eras but I feel like players don't go for holes in seams and pucks into traffic these days.

But they are 4-5-2 in those games, so it hasn't hurt as much as you'd expect.

Because they have given up more than 3 goals just once in that time frame (BC last weekend).

Also, if people didn't know ... the game Friday night has been rescheduled for a 6:05 puck drop. It's going to be a late-arriving crowd for the Hawks.

I would have far more long term confidence if we popped in a 5 spot on somebody this weekend. Granted I know long term confidence is measured in minutes in the playoffs

I thought they should have had a couple more goals against Merrimack. Whether it was player indecision or a bad pass they failed to take advantage of some great opportunities. I can still see a promising 2 on 1 ending with a pass into the skates. The passing needs to be better going forward. They also need to stop taking bad penalties. Two of the three penalties against MC were needless offensive zone penalties. Thankfully the PK has been excellent over the past few games.

Here's your statistical oddity for the day:

At home, Lowell has the 16th worst winning percentage in the nation.
Away from home, Lowell has the 2nd best winning percentage in the nation.

At home, Lowell has the 3rd best penalty kill in the nation.
Away from home, Lowell has the 3rd worst penalty kill in the nation.

At home, Lowell has the 5th best power play in the nation.
Away from home, Lowell has the 18th worst power play in the nation.

Damn that really is weird. Those stats would normally help imply exactly the opposite home and away records. Thanks for this.

I know we aren’t on the bubble but oh boy does it feel like we are. I hate this 10-13 range in the pairwise. So little margin for error in these next few weekends. No more easy games. I just need to see one convincing win this weekend to put my mind at ease.
