Colgate 23-24

My guess is that at our level, long term contracts are more for the coaches than Gate. If a coach sees an opportunity and wants to leave we may make a final offer if we like him/her but won't stand in their way. This was a huge opportunity for Greg and they chose to support him and use his move to show how well our program is respected. The article was front and center on the Athletic site for a week plus. Now it gets dicey and we have to move fast. Sydney Morrow is already in the transfer portal and our recruiting will be hurt further unless we make the right hire supporting the same strong team culture an even better one if if we get an A+ candidate. With the PWHL exploding in popularity and influence our ability to get Gate players drafted like this year will be paramount going forward...

A good friend of mine who has worked with the Dartmouth athletics program for many years including men's and women's hockey just texted me that Maura Crowell is reconsidering taking the Dartmouth job and is instead VERY INTERESTED in the Colgate opening. Any insights?

Very interesting indeed.

Knowing nothing about where we are in the process and who we might be speaking with, it seems like a no-brainer that we would love to discuss the position with Maura and possibly return her to Hamilton as an alum, former very successful coach of UMD in the tough, tough WCHA and as the new head coach of our Women's program. I met her and some family members in Durham at our semis in the frozen 4. Very open and approachable it would be a great hire. When Dartmouth announced her hiring, having just met her I said to myself, bad timing as Greg had not yet announced he was moving. When he did she was gone. If we could sign her I would think Sydney M would leave the portal assuming Greg's departure was the reason for that move.
If she does leave Dartmouth for Colgate I would feel badly for Dartmouth as she is a really good coach. But, that feeling would be short lived...

Makes a ton of sense to sign with a team that is built to win vs a team that is built to not win.

That's just because although she remains on the portal list the latest update does not indicate that she has signed with anyone yet. Hopefully that stays the same until we get a new coach and she decides she wants to stay.

Noticed Alexia Aubin from Stanstead College in Que is not listed on roster yet but appears registered at school. Hope they are just slow in getting her name on roster as she will be a high potential player...Strong forward on several U-18 and higher Canadian national teams. Charismatic, emotional player that fans will really like and other players want to play with.

That’s what my friend from Dartmouth said was what he was hearing from insiders. That Crowell took a deeper look at the program, the roster and recruiting prospects and decided competing in the ECAC would be a daunting task. Better to go to a program where you can win now into the foreseeable future.

Again fingers crossed. Aubin's presence was also confirmed by a reliable source. She should be added to the posted roster asap. We look very solid going into the year if we can keep Sydney.

This seems a bit silly that she would be willing to take a job across country, move her family, and THEN have reservations about the roster, recruiting prospects, overall program, etc. Seems like something that should be more considered before you A- apply and B- publicly accept the position. However, I'm aware that this probably happens all the time in the private sector, new opportunities come up, you're more marketable now....I guess I'll just wait with popcorn to see how this plays out and what possible spin she (and Dartmouth) will put on this if she does, in fact, go after the Colgate position.

I'm happy for him, no one deserves it more. He most likely will continue the "we skate free" culture which is our calling card and unique edge up in recruiting. I also have always sensed the team really likes him so I'm expecting the high standard of Colgate Women's hockey to continue. On a parallel note, here's hoping S. Morrow is one of those supporters and stays. We need her.

People have buyer's remorse all the time. It's human nature. And it's not like she would be the first coach to have a change of heart. Greg Schiano did it with the Patriots - he accepted a coaching position with the team and then a few weeks later, backed out. And this was when the Pats were Super Bowl contenders. Josh McDaniels did the same thing right before he was to be announced as head coach of the Colts.

It's all moot now that Colgate has made its choice.

Rumor on the Transfer Portal page is Morrow is headed to the Gophers. As jimmywallstreet noted there, she's almost certainly out the door to somewhere as she was not listed on Gate's PR piece about who of our players/alums are headed to the USA hockey festival in Aug but is a confirmed invitee herself. Oh well, if that's the case I wish her well and will fondly remember her dangerous O zone presence while with us.

Rightnut, can you do the honors and start our 2024-25 thread. Time to begin The Decosse Era
and life without the great class that arrived in 2019 and ushered in so much success.
