2023 Women's Pro Hockey Offseason: New League? Defections?

Thanks for the info on the European league signings. Does anyone know if these leagues pay any salaries or compensation of any kind?

That's a very good question. The main thing that I could find prompted by your question was that in 2020-21 the average salary was 5,500 kronas per month, while the men in Sweden made 121,000 kronas per month; it would add up to only a bit over 500 dollars per month, which definitely doesn't sound livable without a second job.

I heard a podcast with Swedish team Leksands player Emma Polusny in which she said something about housing for the team as well (Rink Live podcast with timestamps). The cabins where they lived sounded rather cool.

National team players can also receive compensation while playing for their countries.

You are playing for the love of the game and for the whole year abroad thing since you can't do a semester abroad when you are playing D 1. It's a break even prop

I wonder how the PWHPA players feel seeing salaries they could be claiming being handed out to internationals and kids just out of school. Surely the pressure to get a comparable league has to be building. Their playing careers are finite and right now they look to be spending good years playing the bad hand.

Anybody that is caught up in the game that is USA hockey or Team Canada will not instantly be blackballed so they will patiently sit and wait. But, you zero in on the stress the Other league is causing and I have to agree with you on that. It's turning it into a Texas Hold Em game and that is always stressful.

A couple of the players signing just out of school have been involved with the national programs. Hockey Canada for one says publicly they aren't blackballing anyone who plays for the PHF.

Let's face USA Hockey and Canada Hockey somehow always determines who the best players are. Now with a pro league gaining momentum, it will slowly go the way the NHL and Wnba, where the actual play of the game against the best will determine who the best players will be, and fewer Politics and opportunities for late bloomers to actually make an Olympic roster.

Whitecaps sign Schepers of Mound, MN to return for two years. Contract 1st year: $104,000, 2nd year: $120,500. Whitecaps press release.

The Whitecaps press release about Schepers has been revised: "Terms of her two-year contract include a base salary of $70,000 plus potential performance bonuses of up to $34,000 during the 2023-24 season. In 2024-25, her base salary becomes $80,000, plus bonuses up to $40,500." Thus some of the initial disclosed salary was performance bonuses.

Also, Whale sign starting defender Tori Howran to return for two years.

Thanks for the update. This is important information which should have been disclosed at the start.
Nice to see that the Whitecaps are not waiting until the end to put a roster together.

There are plenty of fantastic players who might look to go professional, having exhausted their university eligibility in 2023. A list of "prospects," below, is based on recent stories in The Hockey News about players who have not signed so far in the PHF, SDHL, or SWHL (Switzerland), and it's based on their stats and accolades. If the PWHPA were to announce a league soon, these players would be significant for that.

Will the PHF make all salary information public at some point? Currently, certain contracts and announcements have salary information while others do not. Just wondering if it will all be transparent before the season starts.

My understanding is that salary disclosure is at the discretion of the player so unless the player wants it public it remains private.

Teams in the PHF announced this week that several players graduating from universities had signed:
Tatum Amy (F, Mount Royal – Birtle, MB) with Buffalo Beauts (Beauts press release)
Anneke Linser (F, UMD – Lino Lakes, MN) with Metropolitan Riveters (UMD press release)
Naomi Rogge (F, UMD – Eden Prairie, MN) with Metropolitan Riveters (Riveters press release)
Catie Skaja (F, Minnesota – New Prague, MN) with Minnesota Whitecaps (Rink Live story) for $35,000

All 4 signed to one-year deals. Impressed with the number of UMD Bulldogs signed. Abby Cook (D, BU '20) also signs to the Riveters for one year after playing in the SDHL and SWHL. (Here is another PHF Player Signings tracker, organized by team, by the Victory Press.)

Kati Tabin re-signs with Toronto at $110k per year for two years.

Buffalo has signed Danish defender Amalie Andersen

I believe Andersen is a defender rather than goalie.

Another signing announced today is Madison Bizal (D, Ohio State - Elk River, MN) with the Minnesota Whitecaps for two years.
