UNH Hockey 2023 Off Season Thread Turn and Face the Strange

Ice is overrated. Maybe UNH Hockey can adjust to street/roller hockey instead, and play their games at Lundholm, too?

What does Ben Barr “got” that MS7 “don’t got”?

That list would be long and exhaustive, Snives. For sure, he's got WAY less vowels in his name. He's also been up close & personal with the NCAA D-1 Title trophy three (3) separate times, with three (3) separate programs. Most importantly, the players he recruits actually believe he can make them better players AND maybe even win something in the process? Those are the off-the-cuff, quick ones. I'm sure there are plenty more ...

Kind of hard to attract a big name coach when you are paying D3 salaries (which is a bad analogy as I doubt D3 coaches make 185k). Imagine UNH has a starting point based on longevity?

Time will tell with this new coach. Darius were you at the introduction? I agree with your assertion it was important to get someone on board to bring some stability...

Despite this new coach's past 4 seasons it seems he knows what it takes to win. He has a big task ahead filling slots.

Question...can a de committed player (hockey) "re-commit"? Am poking around the Sam Court de-commit...now there's a spot for him with Carfagna leaving..doubt it tho just wondering...Hopefully by the next couple of weeks we'll have some players lined up to fill the vacancies. Maybe run an ad like RMU did ;-)

Let's go Q!!

Can't help but notice 4 of the 10 replies on one of the Facebook announcements of the new men's basketball coach are comments like "now it's time to fix the men's hockey program", "fire Mike Souza", and so on.

And, we already have on board Stewie with four years of professional roller hockey experience, from 1996 to 1999, with the Anaheim Bull Frogs, the New Jersey Rockin’ Rollers, and the Minnesota Blue Ox.

Charisma baby, charisma. Kiddin aside, I think Benny has a natural likability that comes across pretty quickly. He seems sincere, relaxed, good sense of humor and at the same time focused. In some ways reminds me of Monty. I think people want to play for him.

Looks like Benny also picked up Bentley sophomore forward Harrison Scott (8 goals, 15 points) who scored two of his eight goals against Maine in their 5-1 loss in Waltham during mid-October.

Yeah saw that Maine tookk 2 Bentley boys! Wondered when you'd mention ;-)

Nondescript other than the 204 career penalty minutes, averaging roughly 2 minutes per game.

Take it he plays a gritty game, potential bottom six checking line center in Durham to usher out the MS7 Era, Snives??

Bentley senior forward Lucas Vanroboys (8 goals, 22 points in 2022-2023) transferring to UMass-Flagship via the portal. MS7 let another Bentley portal player slip away.

Now that Rand has won his natty (OT!!) He can hang that banner next season and then...head to UNH to wrap up his storied career... :-)

Very pleased for the Bobcats!

Or his assistant they talked about can lead us to promised land. Hopefully we will get out of the desert of 40 years soon!

Which assistant? Dumais or Corbett or Eddy?

After scoring 23 goals and 148 points at Quinnipiac as a defenseman between 2003/04 and 2006/07, Reid Cashman later was a Pecknold assistant between 2011/12 and 2015/16. Then after four years as an assistant in the AHL and NHL, Cashman just completed his second year as HC at Dartmouth, with a two-year record of 12-46-4, 0.226, considerably worse than MS7’s first two years at our State U.

Meanwhile, Pecknold’s record is now 614-337-103, 0.631, over 21 seasons, somewhat better than Dick’s.

I'm old enough to remember when Quinnipiac used to take our hand me downs (Travis/Furgele/Doherty)

UNH may not be able to offer a large yearly salary, but the advantage to being very slow to move on coaches is you can offer them a long contract. If a guy like Souza who has never been successful can carve out a 9 year run at UNH, UNH should be able to offer a new coach an 8 year contract. Even at a low yearly salary, that's a 2.5 million offer they can make. I wonder how a guy like Dumais would react. BTW, Dumais now has two championships, one shared with Barr at Union, and one at Q (with two runner ups). Not a bad resume to commit to for 8 years.

Edit 2: The East, and particularly HE, has seen a lot of turnover the past 5 years, so it's not clear where the next opening would be. BU/BC/U.Mass/PC/Notheastern/Lowell/UConn/Merrimack/Maine seem locked up for the forseable future. That leaves Vermont and UNH. If Pecknold is not tempted by the NHL, Dumais' path is blocked there. He's an Eastern guy, so UNH would be appealing, and I'm sure he sees the history and potential to revert it back to being competitive. Pecknold would probably encourage him going to HE, away from Q, and with Rand being from NH, may even have a fondness for UNH.

Good question as I just heard Q had an assistant coach that will be a great HC anywhere from Bucci on the call. I should have paid better attention. I was just wanting Minnesota to lose.

Pecknold gave his assistant Dumais all the credit for the play for the OT goal..."they've practiced it a 1000 times". Maybe UNH pulls a UMass and all of the Q staff come here.

Dream on...but hey, haven't stranger things happened??!

technical correction. Dumais and Barr never crossed paths at Union. Bennett brought Dumais in for ‘11-12 when Barr left with Leaman for Providence. Shared Union championship with Jason Tapp.

I think that they must have meant Joe Dumais who played four years for Pecknold and now has been a Pecknold assistant for several years, a similar career path to Reid Cashman, now head coach at Dartmouth. Would be ironic if Pecknold could place a second former Quinnipiac player and assistant in a Div 1 head coaching position in Cow Hampsha, with Dartmouth the doormat of ECAC and UNH the doormat of HEA for the foreseeable future. Any improvement in either program would lead indirectly back to Pecknold, who apparently has family in Cow Hampsha.
