2022-2023 Independents

Week 5

And Arizona State quiets the crowd in Las Vegas with the comeback win over North Dakota.

Team of the week

Arizona State Sun Devils

Just one game in Vegas against the Fighting Hawks who filled the majority of the arena with their fans. North Dakota scores two quick goals and ten minutes in ASU is down 2-0. But Arizona State wouldn’t go away that easily as they go on to score one in each period and not give North Dakota many scoring chances the rest of the way.

I wore my Fighting Sioux t-shirt under my Sun Devils jersey, turned out to be the right choice..........

Week 6

A light week with three teams taking their first week off this season. Lindenwood gets a big sweep at Army and is now 4-4 against Atlantic Hockey. Anchorage on the other hand was swept at Air Force, falling in close games that both ended with an empty net goal.

Team of the week

Lindenwood Lions

The Lions started the weekend off with a goaltending battle on friday. 85 combined shots on goal with only 3 goals being scored. On Saturday they returned to their high scoring ways with a 5-3 victory. Though the Black Knights kept it close through, Lindenwood never trailed in the series finale.

Another light week with only two teams in action this week in Division 1. Alaska Anchorage hosted Simon Fraser for two exhibition games in which they outscored them 10-0. Arizona State lost two at Denver including a controversial game winning goal on Friday. LIU was able to come back to earn the split with Brown.

Team of the week

Long Island Sharks

After losing to Brown on Saturday 5-1, the Sharks found themselves down 4-1 on Sunday nearing the end of the second period. Cade Mason scored his first of two powerplay goals in the game just before the second period ended. The Sharks would add another goal halfway through the third and would pull the goalie late in the third down by one. With 39 seconds left in regulation the Sharks tied it and sent it to overtime. Cade Mason scored the game winner on a power play that saw the Brown goalie sent to the locker room with a game misconduct.

Was great to be able to see one of the goals at Wisconsin when I traveled out there. They only have 4 games as a team in December - 2 next weekend at Denver. Should be interesting. LOL

We, like has happened to CCHA teams, did not provide our own referees at Denver. I hope you wrote your contract to bring the referees with you.

Unfortunately, we have been getting somewhat hosed by the officiating everywhere we have gone. AIC was the worst and it was pretty awful the weekend of Bentley and Wisconsin as well. During the AIC weekend the winning goals in game 1 happened after the refs reviewed film for about 15 minutes after AIC challenged something that happened. There was NO CALL on the ice at all and after looking at tape, the officials came back and called a 5 minute major for a cross check but did not kick the player out of the game meaning there was no head contact. Happened with 10 minutes left in the game with Lindenwood up a goal. 2 goals scored on the major of course and they lose. Was the worst thing I have ever seen. Not to mention countless offsides missed, icings waived off, and another 5 minute major for INTERFERENCE. They definitely had the refs in their back pocket for sure.

That being said, the Lions lead the country in penalties and you just can't do that playing good teams as it kills them every time.

Unfortunately on that goal call in Denver on that ASU weekend, it was hard to tell if they hit the puck with what was clearly a stick above the shoulders. If he didn't hit the puck it can't be a high stick call so they can't overturn that on a challenge, and can't call it a slash on review since they didn't call it on the ice. Either way they clearly botched the call on so many levels in my opinion.

friar9 Unfortunately on that goal call in Denver on that ASU weekend said:
Referee came back a day later, said he called it a no-goal cause of high sticking but "forgot" to signal it on the ice, thus not high sticking upon review. Didn't call slashing on ice so can't call that later either. There was a "no-signal" for a "no-goal live but goal upon the come-to-jesus review". That's why the challenge was challenged. Good luck when you play them.

Wow that's awful! Last thing we need against them is corrupt officiating!

AIC sent game tape to the NCAA on the call they challenged that was called a 5 minute major (but no game misconduct??) after the 15 minutes of looking at tape as they wanted the kid suspended. NCAA said they have no idea why a penalty was called and didn't even think it should be a minor. LOL.

Life of an independent I guess. Those leagues are afraid to lose to them even if its legit

Almost every NCAA team has been on the "wrong side" of officiating. If you listened to MTU's coach the last year or two of the WCHA 2.0, he was sending tape into the league on a regular basis only to get a 'Sorry that wasn't a good call/no call.'

I do think life as an independent is harder as they get different officials from different leagues with unique areas of emphasis/playing style they are use to calling. Complaining to other league head of officials would get brushed off. We all know the NCAA won't do anything no matter how egregious the call/no call is.
