2022-2023 Independents

Almost every NCAA team has been on the "wrong side" of officiating. If you listened to MTU's coach the last year or two of the WCHA 2.0, he was sending tape into the league on a regular basis only to get a 'Sorry that wasn't a good call/no call.'

I do think life as an independent is harder as they get different officials from different leagues with unique areas of emphasis/playing style they are use to calling. Complaining to other league head of officials would get brushed off. We all know the NCAA won't do anything no matter how egregious the call/no call is.

ASU decided to rely on WCHA/CCHA officials to make penalty calls beyond that made on the ice so there would not be any controversy against ASU about such penalties. Also, its why ASU doesn't use their own refs at home games.

The NCAA rules allow the visiting team to bring their own refs, just has to be written into the contracts. I'm thinking its time for the "Independents" to get together, decide on a group of independent refs to use and bring those to the away games. Also use them on home ice if the opposing traveling team doesn't want to bring their own.

I don't know how the multi-conference tournaments work from a referee standpoint but maybe there is something to learn from those?

Week 11

Arizona State traveled across the country and was a shot away in overtime from sweeping New Hampshire. Up in Alaska, for the first time in over 1,000 days the Governors Cup rivalry was renewed. The Nanooks won both games and head down to Anchorage for two more this weekend. Meanwhile LIU swept Franklin Pierce in two D3 games.

Team of the Week

Alaska Nanooks

In the first game between the two teams on Friday in almost 3 years, the Nanooks picked up where they left off with a 5-2 victory. 5 of 7 goals were scored in the second period. On Saturday the Nanooks got out to a 4-0 lead and cruised to a 7-2 win. With the sweep Alaska gets back to .500 on the season.

Any UAA fans have two tickets for tonight’s game they’d be willing to be part with? I purchased tickets on Vivid Seats but haven’t received them yet.

Week 12

A week of near upsets before Christmas. After being shutout on Friday night, Lindenwood battled back to tie Denver in the third period before losing on a goal in the closing minutes. On Sunday, LIU was down 3-0 to Northeastern before scoring 3 unanswered to send it to overtime where for the second time this season, the Huskies beat the Sharks in overtime. Up in Anchorage the Nanooks swept the Seawolves again to hold onto the governors cup for another year.

Team of the Week

Alaska Nanooks

Two more wins this week, this time not allowing a goal on the road at UAA. Friday night the Nanooks jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a goal on a delayed penalty and again on the ensuing powerplay. UAF added a goal a minute into the third and and empty goal late. Saturday night was a tight one to the end. Neither team could get much going until a late powerplay for the Nanooks. With sustained pressure, Chase Dubois found the back of the net just two seconds after the penalty to Anchorage had expired. The Nanooks held on to the 1-0 victory after a last minute push by the Seawolves.

Week 13

What a week for the independents. Lindenwood splits at Vermont, Alaska splits at Notre Dame, Arizona State splits at home versus Boston College and Alaska Anchorage sweeps at UMass- Lowell. The only team to not get a win was LIU who lost in OT on Friday and in another close game on Saturday. The difference maker this week was goaltending. Of the seven goalies who played this weekend, six had a save percentage of at least .921.

Team of the Week

Alaska Anchorage Seawolves

UAA rolled into Lowell Massachusetts with two NCAA wins this season. By Sunday that total had doubled. Friday Lowell was piling on the shots but by the start of the third period only had a 2-1 lead with 43 shots. With their first win when trailing after 2 periods, Anchorage scored 3 unanswered goals to take game one 4-2. Saturday was a much more even game in shots, but it was Anchorage who began the third period ahead 3-1. The Seawolves held on 3-2 for their first sweep of the season.

Great reporting! Goalies earned their scholarships last weekend! Maybe give Huntsville goalie an honorary 1.000???

Burnham was fantastic for Lindenwood. Cut his face with about 6 minutes left in a tie game and made 5 excellent saves right after it. The UVM fans behind me were beside themselves watching it. "We have this kid on the ropes now finish it!" and he just made great save after great save. Kid has been excellent all season despite what the GAA number is.

Such a satisfying win as a Lindenwood fan on Saturday after hearing the fans leaving the rink Friday saying "That was a nice win but it was 'just Lindenwood'" as if they should just step on the ice and win just because they are a Hockey East team. Love when teams sleep on them or take them lightly cause they just don't stop grinding

At North Dakota tonight. Tough place to play!

A good weekend no matter the result tonight. But hoping we make it a great weekend and get another bump in the pairwise. Love watching the Nooks frustrate other teams on offense as the game winds down.

Was so happy when I saw that upset! That's a great win

Wish my Lions had finished strong in both of their games. Had 2 goal leads against UND in both games but didn't get it done. Just not quite deep enough to pull those out! They led the Friday night game for about 48 minutes

Week 14

Following a week with some big wins, Alaska Anchorage and Lindenwood played their hearts out, trailed for a combined 14:34 and came away with no wins. Out west Alaska continued their strong play and split with then #1 ranked Denver. Arizona State lost to Michigan Tech and then shutout Air Force to take third in the Desert Classic.

Team of the Week

Alaska Nanooks

Going into this series the Nanooks had never won at Denver, though they skated to a 4-4 tie last season. On Friday night going into the second in a scoreless game, Alaska scored twice on a 5 minute powerplay and allowed a goal on a 5 on 3 penalty kill. Those were the only goals until Garrett Pyke shot into the empty net from his own defensive circle to ice the game. On Saturday Denver, though held to only 24 shots on goal, took advantage of opportunities and won 7-2. Alaska scored to get within 4-2 with just over ten minutes to go in the game, but didn’t have much left in the tank after a hard fought weekend.

Week 15

It was a rough week for the independents, with only two teams playing and losing all 4 games. LIU lost at Princeton and the next night at home to Quinnipiac. Arizona State was swept at home by Minnesota State and scored only one goal on the weekend.

Team of the Week

With no NCAA wins this week, we will take a look at Stonehill and their schedule. After losing to LIU to open the season, the Skyhawks have gone 14-1-2 against lower level opponents. The last three games they have outscored their opponents 16-4. They have 4 games in February against LIU and Lindenwood and we will see if they can finish the season with a NCAA win to get things rolling next year.

Week 16

Lindenwood traveled to LIU for some independent games and Arizona State hosted RIT. The Sun Devils continued their rough stretch, giving up 10 goals on the weekend in a two game sweep by the Tigers.

Team of the week LIU Sharks

Long Island gets their first sweep of the season over the Lindenwood Lions. The Sharks twice came from a goal down on Friday before winning 3-2 in OT. On Saturday the offenses showed up as LIU scored at the 19:59 mark of the second period to go up 6-3. The lions would add one late in the third but it wasn’t enough. The Sharks will head to Princeton for a single game this weekend as they look to avenge their 5-2 loss earlier this month.

Week 17

Arizona State ends a 4 game losing streak with a sweep at home against St. Thomas. Out East LIU gets revenge over Princeton with a 6-4 win on Saturday where they had to come back from a 3-1 deficit with 13 minutes left in the second period. Up in Alaska the Nanooks played the Seawolves in a home and home series. In 123:11 of game play this weekend, Alaska led for zero seconds and won both games. Each night the Nanooks were down 2 goals in the third period and would tie it up before winning in overtime.

Team of the week

Arizona State Sun Devils

After giving up 18 goals in four straight home losses, ASU needed to right the ship. Though they started slow on Friday the Sun Devils outshot the Tommies 41-17 and scored four goals in the last 21:52 of the game and pitched a shutout for the first time since their last victory in early January. Saturday would prove to be a much tougher test as ASU would battle back to tie three times before winning in Overtime. A game in which they also never led until the final horn.
