Climate Change 3: Whatever you do don't call it a twatwaffle

Well I remember being in Middle School when scientists told us we would run out of oil in 20 years. Then I remember being in Geology Class in college and they said we would run out of oil in 20 years. Then I remember being in Grad School and them saying we would be out of oil in 20 years...

Did we really know how much was under Venezuela or in the Bakken at the time?

Either way, point taken

I was actually backing your point that people suck at guessing actual times. Things change, we learn more and sometimes that knowledge makes things easier (we find more oil) but it also makes things harder.

That has actually been happening, though. It's just the cost associated with exploiting more difficult reserves drops *just* enough to keep the expected value function positive.

Those guys were all "right." They just underestimated the (taxpayer subsidized) scientific miracles petrochemical companies have worked in keeping their businesses going.

It's like medicine, except it's killing us instead of healing us, so actually it's the opposite of medicine.

Ok Malthus.

Could have gone here or the science thread I guess.

A giant donut-shaped machine just proved a near-limitless clean power source is possible

The potential for fusion energy is enormous. The JET experiment used the elements deuterium and tritium -- which are isotopes of hydrogen -- to fuel the fusion. Those elements are likely to be used in commercial-scale fusion, and can be found in seawater.

"The energy you can get out of the fuel deuterium and tritium is massive. For example, powering the whole of current UK electrical demand for a day would require 0.5 tonnes of deuterium, which could be extracted from seawater -- where its concentration is low but plentiful," Tony Roulstone from the University of Cambridge's Department of Engineering told CNN.

He said the fusion generated by JET was around the same as a wind turbine, and could power one house's energy for a day.

"But if generated repeatedly, it could power thousands of houses."

Experts say the results prove that nuclear fusion is possible, and no longer a pipedream solution for the climate crisis.

That's crazy. 5 seconds and it produced 13+ kWh. Imagine in 100 years when it's cloudy out and you just need to fire up your home fusion generator for 5 seconds to fill up your battery or respin your flywheel.

That was starvation.

Try to keep up with the megadeaths.

Malthus in this sense is shorthand for anyone who claims we're doomed because X while ignoring the scientific, technological, and engineering advancements that 'magically' allow us to keep pushing X off.

You know, I was thinking that when the dust settles from the Ukrainian conflict, I wonder how much further the natural gas hostage taking is going to push Germany and Europe to renewables. The strategic anchor it hangs around your neck is kind of all powerful. Might be one of the very few positives to come out of this horror.

Oh, renewable energy Twitter has been fantastic this last week. Truly the most positive thing all week for me. We’ve been ALL over this :)
