POTUS 45.65: I'm Just Here For The Lincoln Project Ads

Anyone who thinks trump was/is a good "businessman" doesn't know the first thing about business, or finance, or actual entrepreneurship, or anything at all related. The only thing trump understood about "business" is that it does often take money to make money, and since he inherited a lot of money, he had the means to play in the game. Couple that with the fact that the tax and banking regulations favor people who are in trump's position of inherited wealth and that is why he has been able to perpetuate his grifting for parts of five decades now.

I want to believe that 40 or 50 years ago this kind of abject stupidity was not so commonplace, but maybe I am idealizing a former reality that never quite existed. No matter how corruct or criminal Nixon was (he was lots of one and at least a little of the other) he was not stupid or unqualified (other than the corruption/criminality) to serve as president or in any other of the elected offices he held. trump on the other hand is not only the most corrupt and criminal person to have ever held the office of POTUS, he was one of the least effective and worst performing ones we have ever had. Yet 70,000,000 million voters think he is d am n near Jesus.

On another note, how far are we away from him performing some stigmata stunt. I thought about that after listening to him drone on about being persecuted for all of us! What if Jesus came back like that indeed...

Kevin Conway, a former office in the United States Army wrote in the Dispatch about the kind of choice trump would have been asking of our military in 2020, and might still ask of them if he was to be elected again:

Generals would be forced to choose whether to abandon an unbroken tradition of American military obedience to civilian control, or turn their guns on civilians to facilitate a losing candidate remaining in the White House beyond Inauguration Day.

The foreseeable consequences of Clark, Eastman, and Trump’s criminal plot would have been profound for the military and the nation. I suspect the generals would have reluctantly chosen the first of the two bad options they faced.

We're lucky that it didn't come to it because I wonder if the author of that opinion piece is correct.

Our military (much like law enforcement) is becoming more and more populated by authoratarian types who live and die by what someone like trump says. I'm still somewhat confident (but less and less with each passing year) that the senior advisors and commanders in the military (enlisted and in the officer corps) feel more or less beholden to the constitution as most of us here would see it. I doubt those kinds of people would choose to turn their weapons on civilians protesting a stolen election (I mean one that is really stolen, like trump would do, not one that wasn't stolen, like the one Biden won). I'm not sure of the ones who are moving through their careers now though, the E-4s and 5s or O-3s, those deciding on whether or not to make the military their career for 30 years or more.

God help us if we ever have to find out because we're not going to be talking about George Floyd level protests. We'll be talking about factions of our military waging war on other factions of it. And that would almost certainly trigger something far worse and what our descendents would refer to (providing our species survives) as World War Three.

Trump is good at business if the only criteria is to enrich himself at the expense of anyone else. Yes his finances are a paper tiger and hopefully his run of avoiding legal scrutiny will soon come to an end.

A fair chunk of the military believes in End Times hayseed Christianity. You don't want any of those people anywhere near WMD.

I have never understood the absolute lust and fervor some Christians have with the Book of Revelations. Why are they so hellbent on triggering and personally witnessing the end of time?

That would mean God is very, very cruel. To me, one major issue with those kind of "Christians" is that they honestly think that the 80% of the world who are not Christian will all end up in hell just because. Meaning a murder/rapist who kind of asks for forgiveness can go to heaven but a Buddhist Monk wont.

Still, you are right- why are people so interested in the world ending on their watch?

Our military...is becoming more and more populated by authoritarian types who live and die by what someone like trump says.

This may be true among the enlisted, but whose fault is it that we've made military service one of the better options for young adults to get away from a repressive/abusive home (my BIL joined the Navy to get away from their terrible stepmother), or for those born into poverty (and thus, more likely to support authoritarianism if it gets them ahead)?

That these same folks then often default to a LE career after completing their service is another issue, which I also consider problematic if they're hiring guys with PTSD, MDD, GAD, etc. from multiple tours of guerilla combat in Iraq & Afghanistan.

Losers want everyone to be as miserable as they.

A sizeable minority of fundamentalist religious people of all faiths have the mentality of incel school shooters.

There are fetid, stagnant backwaters in the gene pool.

Aside: I have absolutely no fix on what a "Methodist" is. I remember Mencken used to make fun of them. But are they rich/poor? White/black? Stupid/stupider?

I need a Methodist stereotype.

Also: what the hell, Alaska?

What's funny about that map is that apparently the LCMS isn't in the majority in any county in Missouri.

All I know about Methodists is that the mainline UMC is ironically more liberal than the so-called "Free" Methodists. Also, they do that kinda neat "Silent Night" outro with the candles during Christmas service.

Apparently in the Documents case, his legal team has requested time to build a secure room at Mar-A-Lago to view material that will be turned over via Discovery. You know, the same material that was seen sitting in a bathroom and on an office floor.

THEY NEED TIME TO BUILD A SECURE ROOM TO VIEW MATERIALS THAT THEY CLAIM DIDN'T NEED TO BE SECURED!!!

Like, I'm sorry, but I'm gonna need a bit of time and some mind-altering substances to wrap my head around this one...

Russian Orthodox. It's a legacy of Russia colonizing Alaska first and Native Alaskans never converting to something else. Mat-Su and Kenai being Mormon? They're both areas close to Anchorage and services but have a lot of open space to hide from people asking questions. Granted, both areas are awash in fundies of various churches and I'd bet the Mormons are winning on plurality.

Seems like an admission of guilt there.....

That is so cool. All I know about Alaskan religion I learned from the Northern Exposure plot arc with Joel's great grandfather.

I was surprised Hawaii wasn't solid Mormon. It's a runaway invasive species down there and in the Pacific islands in general. Only other folks who like spam, I guess.
