CCHA v2.0 - BGSU FSU LSSU MTU NMU w/ BSU MSU & Special Guests - The Tommies

I really thought they should have created a new conference. New everything... Id like to see some teams join the color rush and improve their jerseys.
I would guess going the CCHA route was the cheapest option and path of least resistance. No real thought required. Five out of seven teams making the decision were previous CCHA members at some point. Clearly a lot of money wasn't spent if "reconstituted" was the best description they could come up with for the new conference. Of course after the website that was used to search for a Comish, are any of us surprised that low budget was a primary consideration?

Michigan Tech first joined the CCHA for the 1981-82 season so I like the nice round number of doing it again 40 years later.

And yeah, I'm ALWAYS up for new jerseys. I'll buy the old ones. :-) If anyone knows of teams blowing out their old WCHA stuff, shoot me a message - thanks! (I already know about Mankato's auctions.)

Maybe someone more connected than me can provide some input, but if I had to guess I'd say Bowling Green, Lake State, and Ferris wanted the CCHA name back and felt strongly about it. Northern probably had some positive feelings toward the CCHA name but nothing strong. Bemidji and Minnesota State were indifferent.

And that leaves Tech, who if I had to guess didn't want the name but didn't raise a stink about it since no one else felt strongly against it and they could bring the MacNaughton Cup with them, so they were OK with it all in the end.

I think the Mavs are the ones bringing the MacNaughton Cup with them... I kid.

Hopefully Whitmer backs off on the restrictions for fan attendance by the fall in Michigan.

Even so taking politics out of it, Lake State on its own decided to have no fans when they could have had some. That decision robbed local families the chance to see their kid in person (Calder and Gamelin) and fans from seeing the best Laker team in 25 years. Very unfortunate.

New CCHA website is up and running and it's a massive improvement over the old WCHA.com. Some highlights:
  • Announced referee microphones to announce decisions through the area PA system
  • Announced additional hi-res/slo-mo cameras to speed up reviews (I'll believe that when I see it, but the attempt is worthy of at least a golf clap)
  • CCHA "Radio On-Demand" which appears to consolidate the various coaches shows and other school productions to make it easy to give a listen to what other coaches, etc. are doing
  • And much more!
This is a nice first step for the league.

Bowling Green fans absolutely wanted the name back. We were a founding member of the CCHA back in 1971. The footprint of the original league made perfect sense for us, and our greatest achievements (including the 1984 national title) came in that league.

Objectively speaking, it also makes more geographical sense.

(It will be interesting to see what happens to the old WCHA name, by the way.)

they [WCHA] will keep using it... the women's side is not going away.

The conference schedule release isn't officially until Thursday, but combined with what I already know it looks like the first four games listed on the site are not just placeholders and are indeed going to happen.

Therefore, the first CCHA games for St. Thomas will be in Marquette against NMU on October 8-9. Bemidji plays BGSU on October 29-30. Michigan Tech will be at home against Lake State on November 5-6, the same weekend Minnesota State is at Ferris.

And in breaking news that surprises absolutely nobody, league members will be looking to undo Mankato's death grip on the MacNaughton Cup which will now be awarded to the CCHA's regular season champion.

I like it. That thing has history, and it deserves to go wherever Tech goes.

It also appears very likely they will be announcing that the postseason champion will be awarded the Mason Cup, as I saw a photo from a behind the scenes of a photoshoot with it yesterday. I guess we'll see when it's announced officially tomorrow, but that's what my money would be on.

That makes sense to me.

"...the CCHA now has arguably the best trophy tandem in collegiate hockey."

The MacNaughton Cup would still be in the best tandem even if it was paired with a rusted tin can nailed to plywood.

I am not a fan of the schedule where 4 teams will play 14 home games and the other 4 only 12 games. Who came up with that bright idea?

The teams wanted more open weekends to play more non-conference games. Now we'll see how many of them can actually find enough opponents to fill all the open weekends. A balanced scheduled of 28 conference games would have just been too easy and obvious. Some of that old WCHA "let's make things harder than necessary" mentality hanging around... LSSU ends up being the winner of the unbalanced schedule in my opinion, only having to play Mankato two times. Chances their placement in the conference will be decided by less than 6 points. 100%

"Let's avoid the obvious answer and give the fans something to gripe about right out of the gate."

My vote was for a 28 game conference schedule. Considering Tech managed to land a grand total of ONE non-conference home game for the upcoming season (no I don't count USA U-18 as a legit game), they certainly didn't use the open weekends to generate more revenue.

With the current teams, there's one geographical outlier that makes home/home series difficult (Bemidji). It could have been figured out.

As for scheduling out of conference, there's two schools of thought. One is schedule for revenue no. The other being get more than one team in the NCAA Tournament. There's also different theories on the second one. Some seem to think scheduling better teams is more important than scheduling teams you can actually beat.

Don’t forget that kicking the Alaskas out leaves room for 8 non conference games, which I’m sure teams will try to get at least 3 of the other leagues on the docket. NMU has 7 NC games + a USA exhibition, all at home this year with the Big 10, Hockey East, ECHC and NCHC all represented
