That's the thing: they don't have real empathy. All they have is a moment when they think "the thing affecting me is affecting you therefore your concern is valid." But that's not empathy. It is not empathy to only care about somebody else's toothache when your tooth aches.

That is behind the mentality of much conservative thinking. "Why should I pay for public schools? I don't have a child using them." "Why I should I pay welfare? I have a job." "Why should I allow people to have abortions? I don't believe in them." The core of conservative thinking is: what's in it for me? Dump is in this respect the Ideal Conservative. We have heard him say a trillion times, "why would somebody do that -- what's in it for them?" Right now his attitude is "why would I care about the tradition of peaceful transfer of power -- what's in it for me?"

Personal anecdote: I have a close college friend who has fully and vocally embraced "abortion is bad!" as her conservative tilt on social media for the last year. I politely reminded her a few months back that in some states, like Texas, the two miscarriages she had before her rainbow baby she could have been forced by Texas to have funerals for them and a state investigation into the miscarriage. (if she lived there). The snowflake promptly blocked me.

My closest friend growing up has become a reactionary over immigration (he married into a southern military family and I think they Borg-assimilated him) to the point where it is embarrassing and painful to engage him on politics. What I'm finding is it's really hard to still consider him a friend when I don't respect him anymore. And the sleep I used to lose over drifting away from him is more than compensated for by enlarging the circle of good people close to me.

It sucks when somebody you cared about goes bad, but it happens. Let them go. Life's too short to spend it arguing with / begging / trying to save bad people. They aren't lost. They found themselves. They're just not somebody you like.

That seemed to happen in Oregon...and the Trumpers are worried Capitol Police in DC are going to act that way tomorrow.
 
Impeach him again. I don't honestly care if he isn't removed from office. Make him the 1st president to be impeached twice. I'm not usually one for performative politics, but this is...

I don't even know how to describe our situation.

Same here, just sent emails to Eshoo, Harris, and Feinstein. Don't just mention Trump, mention using the mounds of video to go after those involved and those in Congress who encouraged it.
 
My congressman Tim Walberg is part of the sedition movement, but I sent him an email anyway. I also mentioned that he is to blame for this and should resign. Nothing will happen.
