Question of the Day

Today's question:

For those of you who got a stimulus check last spring, did you get a 1099 from the IRS recently? When I went to see my mom over the weekend, she showed me what she got in the mail. Could not figure out why the IRS sent her a 1099 - we came to the conclusion that's what it was for.

ETA: Never mind. I think we figured out what it was for.

I circled around after all this and researched the law. dx is absolutely right for present law. I could not find a state where signal for all turns is not required. In New York, where I learned, a left signal for turning from a left turn only lane is required by state law.

I couldn't imagine why a turn signal would not be required. I understand the people behind you know you're in a turn only lane, but if I'm at that intersection coming from any other direction, how would I know you're in a turn only lane? Yes, there are sometimes other indicators, but turn signals are super easy to use and make intentions much clearer.

The situation in which it used to be good not to signal was when you were making a 180 at a four way intersection in a left only lane. Say you are stacked 2 deep. If the person in front of you is signalling you know they will be making a 180. If they are not signalling you know they will be making a simple left. Their car will follow two different trajectories based on that choice.

Now imagine they *have* to signal left. Since they can't not signal, they have been denied giving you information.

I'd have preferred that always stayed the case but I also know it was a rule most people couldn't handle and so you couldn't really trust the guy in front of you to be giving you good information. People are lazy, ignorant, dumb, etc, so simplifying rules is almost always good even if a more complex system would have a higher ceiling of information.

You have to tailor any tool to its dumbest user. c.f. democracy.

I told my kids the same thing my Mom told me about signals when she taught me... “The only thing a signal means is that it works”. In other words, do not expect someone to effectively communicate their intentions to you on the road... expect anything, and anticipate everything!

Cheers!!!

Not even. I've had signals jam on.

Don't spill Coke onto your signal indicator wand.

Actually, I had to replace the signal indicator wand on my old Nissan Altima. The gear broke, and I couldn't signal anything. That's when I learned about partsgeek.com, and also learned that Nissan made that wand a PITA to remove and insert the screw.

Since we're all still talking about turn signals, I wish there was a way to indicate to the idiots who do not shut their turn signal off. I drove behind three different people just this morning who had a left turn around the world thing going on. Can they make them noisy so people realize they forgot to shut it off? Oy.

Today's question:

Do any of you guys like eggplant? I've never tried it but saw a recipe on a Greek Cooks website that is supposedly healthy and looks kinda interesting. I'm not very adventurous when it comes to food but in my quest to add more veggies to my diet, I was thinking of giving it a whirl.

I've tried eggplant a few times, and just don't like it. Either it's slimy (probably cooked wrong), and I can't even get to the point of tasting it, or the taste is simply not good to me.

As to the turn signal sound, I think they've made them quieter over the years as road noise in the various car cabins have been reduced. I rented a car once (forget which) where the loudness of the turn signal's click-clack --it's an industry term-- was tied to the volume of the radio. That was a very smart design.

I auto-pay anything with a fixed payment if I can charge it to my main CC.

I also use that CC for every day purchases because I can pay it off immediately from my phone since it's the same issued bank as my work checking account. I've racked up some serious points/miles since I started doing that. My cc also offers 12 months 1% financing on any purchase over $250. I've only used it once for a laptop and I paid if off in 2 months anyway.

My wife makes a kick-ass eggplant parmigiana and lasagna, and she uses eggplant (the little round ones) in one of her Thai curries.

Alton Brown has a technique IIRC. You salt it heavily in a colander and let it sit for an hour. Then wash it really well. I can't quite remember all of the details. I wouldn't attempt this unless you find the recipe.

I can take or leave it. It's okay if it's peeled and sliced up, then breaded and pan-fried; or if it's stewed into a vegetable curry dish.

Today's question:

How long do flies normally live? I have one in my condo that I think got in when I opened my balcony on Saturday for, like, 8 seconds. It's driving me crazy today. Trying to get it to a place where I can either open my front door and let it loose in the hallway, or my balcony so it can be free outside. Except that it's really cold outside today. It hasn't landed anywhere safe for me to try and kill it.
