POTUS 46.10: A New Hope

He did. He was. So is Biden.

Was he? We didn't really hear anything when he set it all in motion, just on Biden now that he's actually carrying through. Remember when Obama released 5 Taliban for one US soldier and got raked over the coals; Trump released 5000 for nothing and not a fucking peep.

Well to be fair on the scale of things that Trump did that might not even rank in the Top 5.

J.D.

He trolls all Cons no matter what. He chums the water.

Your liberal media at work.

So... abandoning weapons and vehicles in Syria... not a goddammed peep from the right. Having vehicles and weapons taken in Afghanistan? Criminal.

Sounds on par for GQP talking points.

I think it's the images of seeing the Taliban in power, people trying to run on to planes etc. How quickly it happened (on that note I don't believe for a second we didn't know this was coming). Not the act of setting this all in motion. Not that Trump needs other reasons to be destroyed but he'd be taking a bigger beating in the media than Biden has.

I disagree. Faux would find a way to not be so harsh. Did they ever condemn him from meeting with Kim? I don't recall that. Nor did they mention anything about him siding with vladdy over his own Intel services.

Biden and his administration do deserve blame for letting this get so bad so fast, but lets not get out of hand that dumpy would get more abuse than this. It would be the same, or slightly less thanks to favorable media.

If this happened under Dump, the far-right propaganda outlets that 33% of the country get all their opinions from would praise his decisiveness and declare the chaos on the ground to be a sad and unavoidable consequence of a war effort poorly planned and executed by Bush and Obama (remember, the right considers them to be one and the same now).

Great input, Scooby. This board would be lost without you.

But I do know Trump would have been destroyed if he made the exact same decision
Sorry, that statement is a joke. The man should be in jail right now. Bare minimum. Instead he's golfing every day and living the good life of playboy millionaire. He is the poster child for the plutocrat class in the United States. He hasn't suffered one iota for any of the positively evil things he has done his entire life.

The withdrawal from Afghanistan needed to happen. Trump started it, and Biden rightfully finished it. I give Trump credit for starting the process. What sucks is we didn’t get people out faster. I hope we are now. Biden and his administration deserve some blame for people unnecessarily dying since they’re in charge now, but it needed to be done.
That said, the media loves this stuff. Chaos and death are their cornerstones, and in this instance, writing stories about other world leaders questioning Biden’s ability to lead, as if Macron, Johnson, and others wanted four more years of Trump at the wheel. Biden is still a calming, steady presence, no matter what the headlines say. Yes, Trump would have caught flak, but I doubt the “Is Trump capable of leading? Are world leaders trusting of him?” type stories would have circulated. The answers were obviously “fuck no”, and therefore boring to write and not worthy of clicks.
That all said, I just hope the 5,000-7,000 people per day scheduled to evacuate continues to happen until everyone is out, Dunkirk-style.

I give them 0 credit for the complete disorganized cluster fuck they have made the withdrawl process. We should have started this in May.

In hindsight, it would have been a good idea to start getting people out early, without anyone paying attention. I wonder if they could have kept that quiet or not if it was done.

From what I've read from non-screechy sources and people that spent substantial time there (and several have contacts involved in this), is that the collapse was immediate and began virtually the second they started pulling people in. If that's the case, no timeline would have changed the outcome. The Afghani government was a house of cards and any movement would topple it. Even if the Administration knew this (and maybe they did, maybe they didn't), what could they have done differently?

arguing over who would get pilloried more for this is pointless.

Exactly.

Frankly, it doesn't matter who is the POTUS when something like this occurs, you are going to be criticized by someone, somewhere for either doing something or not doing something that contributed to it. That is a fact of life for that job.

Permanent or long term placement of U.S. troops in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, etc..., is stupid. It doesn't work. It hasn't worked since the Romans were doing it.

If citizens of a country don't want to be ruled by despots or wackjobs, they have to make that decision themselves, then do something about it.

If that is truly true, then you're correct and I am wrong. But, I will always believe that this could have been handled better. Maybe we needed a small protection force and to get everyone in camps that are protected by our forces so we could get everyone out. There had to be a better way than all this chaos.
