From what I read, yes. MBS is still ticked off at Biden's lack of reception since Biden took office. But I don't think Biden made the call. I think an intermediary did, and MBS still refused the call.

Could be. Never know anymore given much self-referencing "confirmations" there are these days.

Long and detailed but interesting.

In the middle Arne makes the analogy between China : Russia now and Germany : Austria-Hungary in early 20th century.

Snyder makes a fascinating comment: this is the first major geopolitical crisis in which China has more influence than we do.

Do they? Because it seems like biden has basically rallied the world and China has basically been relegated to sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up status.

He means China could stop this by telling Putin no, but we can't do anything because nuclear powers cannot face each other directly.

I agree with you that this war is the best thing to happen to American and European leadership and unity since WW2. It may even mark an inflection point where the withering and fracturing of the West since WW2 reverses.

Radical chic may actually become pro-Western as long as the West can finally slough off the Thatcher-Reagan reactionary straightjacket of neoliberalism.

I think we're well past anyone being able to tell Putin "no". The world has done more than China could ever do as a single entity. The world is sending Putin back 150 years. China couldn't do that without literally nuking him.

They are the lone supply line to the outside world though, aren't they?

Yeah, but that's like trying to save someone with an IV drip of blood when they're missing a leg. It'll keep you alive longer, sure, but how much is debatable.

Ok, so a quick google search says that China makes up about 22% of Russia's total imports and 13% of their total exports (Belarus makes up another 5% in both directions). That's more than I expected but I still don't think that's enough.

Guess we should all be paying attention to the companies who want to make money in russia when they fight a war like this.

Why...we aren't going to give anything up because of what is happening. You have to know that.

Convenience > do what is right

Unless you never wear name brand clothes, shoes, use technology, invest in banks...etc.

Kazakhstan, a major Russian ally, is lending assistance....to Ukraine: https://twitter.com/b_nishanov/status/1502069706806681600

It has to be done:

In the first few days, Russia asked Kazakhstan for logistical assistance. Kazakhstan told them no. Now, I see they went a step further.

Wow. That's... wow.

The Russians just saved K's dictator's butt a few months ago, and now he gives Poots a big ol' ef you.

Somebody is banking on Russian regime change.
