Conservative Twitter would like you to know that #BenghaziIsNotGoingAway

120k dead from a Pandemic, American Soldiers being targeted by Russia...none of that matters at all.

Speaking of Turkey, this is... bad.

But, hey, what's the worst that could happen?

Then in 1846 a disturbance occurred inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, in Jerusalem – the holiest of sites for Christians and therefore a focal point for conflict. To maintain peace there the Muslim governor of Jerusalem had been posting soldiers inside and outside the church. Despite this, fights had been erupting. And on Good Friday a conflict between who was to use the altar first escalated into a brawl. In his book The Crimean War, Orlando Figes writes:

The rival groups of worshippers fought not only with their fists, but with crucifixes, candlesticks, chalices, lamps and incense-burners, and even bits of wood which they tore from the sacred shrines. The fighting continued with knives and pistols smuggled into the Holy Sepulchre by worshippers of either side.

WWJK?

The riot ended with more than forty people dead on the church's floor. In 1847 and 1848 there were more unseemly scuffles between Catholic and Orthodox Christian monks and priests in Jerusalem; the representatives of the Orthodox Church emerged triumphant: for example, at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Catholics had placed a silver star to commemorate the place of Jesus' birth. It was pried out and stolen, and Catholics described Orthodox monks as the thieves, and in Jerusalem Orthodox monks and Catholic priests again scuffled.

France's president, Louis Napoleon, made a show of being a good Catholic and championed Roman Catholic control over Christianity's sites in the Holy Land. Turkey's sultan, Abdulmecid I, had been educated in France, and he favored French control over the Christian sites. Nicholas saw this as a blow to Russia and to Orthodox Christianity. On April 19, 1853, while waiting for a response, Russia proclaimed the right to protect Christians in the Ottoman Empire. On May 21, the Ottomans rejected the Russian ultimatum.

Hermit Kingdom News.

My takeaways from this story are:

(1) this kid found out Kim Jong Un was dead

(2) running a totalitarian state means skimming the 1% prettiest 16-year old girls off the top every year for a lifetime of sexual slavery

Kurdish YPG is anti-fascist so they fight ISIS.
USG blesses American citizens to go to Syria to join YPG to fight ISIS.
US air-drops supplies and arms to YPG throughout 2015, and coordinates them with special forces.
YPG defeats ISIS in several significant battles and stops their expansion.

Erdogan hates that the YPG is anti-fascist, so he attacks them.
Erdogan tells Dump YPG is Antifa.

Dump has DOS declare YPG a "terrorist organization."
Americans who fought with YPG, at USG bequest, now considered linked to terrorists.

I don't know exactly how far it is from the Blue Mosque to the Hagia Sophia, but it's a very short walk. Sublime pizzing match.

Edit: So many of the monuments we consider sublime were built out of greed, brutality and the hunger for power. Makes one appreciate even more the poetry, music and visual arts that were created from vision, passion, and a few simple tools.

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet’s wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

Yeah, I know: wrong thread.

Isn't that where China dumped a metric sh**-ton of dirt and trash to build some man made islands? Might as well build a secret port under all that.

No, this particular base is built into the side of a large hill/small mountain on the south shore of Hainan Island, which is a province just off the southern China coast. Hainan is kind of like China's Florida - trashy new rich people from the big cities buy expensive, poorly-built condos there to brag to their friends.

Does it look kinda like this?

Pretty sure the US and other intelligence services have known about this base for awhile. What is likely unknown is exactly how large it is.

Well, duh. But I wasn't aware of it, I guessed others on this board weren't aware of it, and I thought people would find it interesting.

Fun's fun, but Dump's controller has had just about enough in Belarus.

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia gave an ominous warning on Thursday to protesters in Belarus not to push too hard to topple their country’s embattled president, saying that Russia had formed a special reserve force of security officers to restore order in the event of chaos in its western neighbor.

Mr. Putin, speaking in an interview with Russian state television, said he had ordered the creation of a “certain reserve of law enforcement officers” at the request of Belarus’s authoritarian leader, Aleksandr G. Lukashenko. He said the force had not been deployed yet, because “we also agreed that it will not be used unless the situation gets out of control.”

Mr. Putin’s remarks sent the strongest warning yet that Russia could use force to halt more than two weeks of protests in Belarus, which he described as “perhaps the closest country to us.” While saying that Belarusians themselves must decide their future after a disputed presidential election on Aug. 9, he added, “We are certainly not indifferent to what is happening there.”

Mr. Putin, who works hard to cultivate an aura of invincibility, can hardly afford to be.

The crisis in Belarus has confronted the Russian leader with a perilous dilemma: After weeks of protests in the Russian Far East and a wave of indignation over the poisoning of his most prominent opponent, Aleksei A. Navalny, Mr. Putin is loath to see the demise of a fellow authoritarian who himself seemed invincible until this month. It might give Russians ideas.

An interesting article that came to me via Firefox's recommended links: the incredible true story of how the CIA used a fake radio station to oust the democratic President of Guatemala and destabilize the region for decades.

The most interesting part of the story? The CIA provided a six-stage step-by-step playbook on how to create fake media and destabilize a governement.

And all while researching this story about a 1954 story of outside governments interfering with other governments, it wqs found that Russia is using the playbook against the US.
