  • The USCHO Fan Forum has migrated to a new plaform, xenForo. Most of the function of the forum should work in familiar ways. Please note that you can switch between light and dark modes by clicking on the gear icon in the upper right of the main menu bar. We are hoping that this new platform will prove to be faster and more reliable. Please feel free to explore its features.

Can we go back to the prior format?

Just to clarify, I don't work here anymore so you can stop blaming me. Or blame me all you want; I don't care. :) I haven't gotten email from the site since May and have not logged in except when UAA announced it was dropping hockey. I am too busy dealing with other things and just stopped by to offer their fans my sympathies. After scrolling through a couple of threads I see I haven't missed much in my absence.

On the bright side, you needn't worry about the aesthetics of the new board much longer.

That could be an very dubious statement, are they bombing it or fixing it?

I started looking into options last week out of curiosity. With a lightweight board platform like phpbb I could probably get a fairly simple hosting option for under $10 a month. At that cheap I’d just eat the cost.

I’m very confident I could get it up and running. I’m familiar with most of the tools needed to host. I’ve just never done it myself. I’m a quick learn though. I taught myself JavaScript (at least a decent working knowledge) in a couple weeks.

the hard part will be finding a host and actually working through the details.

Yeah that was as far as I made it...they offer you options usually and what they recommend and they arent so bad. I was going to bite the bullet but only like 2 people said they were interested so I put it on the backburner until we got closer to the endpoint. (which seems fast approaching)

If you want we can tag team it that way it doesnt bog either of us down going through the details.

If you guys do that, I'm in. I donate to GPL, and I would donate to this cause if it happened. The previous format for USCHO was one of the best ones I've seen on a board. So easy to use, navigate, and interface as a user. Obviously, I'm biased, but I think GPL's format is the best, but they also pay way more for it. This format sucks balls.

Agree completely

I’m in, if this is the end. Kinda weird. I used to read POI back in the day but never posted. Eventually transitioned to GPL and then USCHO. Now... this makes me a little sad.

I'm still trying to figure out ticapnews' ominous post in light of his earlier statement that he doesn't work here anymore, hasn't received an email from here since May, hasn't logged in and has been too busy with other things, yet seems to have insider info.

My experience with offshoot boards is that they last - at most - a few months before activity withers to zero and people stop visiting.

I don't post often but am a very regular visitor here. I find most posters to be interesting and often humorous. I also find it easier to come here to find out what's happening in the world rather than searching elsewhere.

If someone does set up something else I would definitely do my best to follow and would hopefully be willing to pay a little in support as well. I rarely even go to the D1 side anymore so that has little draw. Hopefully whatever you guys figure out it will allow embedded stuff and pictures and what not again.

Thank you in advance to anyone who takes up the task.

This is true unless it's already an established board and there is a migration rather than an attempt to restart.

I would definitely miss many, many people here.

What makes this different from other boards that have tried to move onto greener pastures as a group is our makeup:

- More or less most of us have been here regularly for at least 7-8 years
- Our numbers aren't too small, but it's also not overwheming to communicate the move. I doubt any of us are more than 2 degrees of separation apart from each other via other posters that we regularly socialize with through other forms of media or in-person.

I just hope that given that this has been a thing for over 20 years for some people, BOARD/USCHO would give us some lead time if they were to pull the plug.

Agree with the sentiments above.

I know things aren’t forever. I would greatly miss this group.

I also don’t have delusions that this would turn into a GPL or other major board. Honestly this is just a cheap way to scratch my politics, entertainment, and general sports itch. That new board will die eventually. It’s like any community, it’s only as strong and vibrant as the members in it.

I see the benefit of continuing what we have as being greater than the effort to maintain it on the tech front.

I miss what GPL used to be...now I miss the few people I could still have a conversation with over there. Havent been back since May and not sure I will ever go back again.

Message boards are dying in general from what I have been hearing. Whats funny though is this one got tons of traffic year round so it makes no sense to me. Shutting down the board or bleeding it out means the site itself most likely will die soon as well. No offense to the people writing the articles but most people who traffic this place arent going to do so just to read your write up of the game. (unless it is their only means)

The other problem I ran into when I was looking into it was the rules. How would I (or most likely we as I would want lots of input) make it so the board doesnt de-volve into the comment section of The Hill. Over my 20 years here I would say for the most part we have policed ourselves quite well...certainly since the board rebooted itself in the early 00s when a lot of the trolls started getting banned on the regular...even though they would always come back and some still post. Hell we are in the midst of a Global Pandemic where literally everything is politicized and social unrest is at an all time high and it still isnt as bad as it used to be. I mean we have like 3 mods if you believe board and how often did we ever really see them unless they were posting under their non-mod names? I post on boards with dozens of them (who post regularly as well) and they are always keeping the peace. USCHO was unique in that regard.

I almost think we would need to do something similar like on GPL where the mods are labelled and post but are also there to keep things in line. We dont want to be hardcore but we cant just let things spiral either.
