sure, it's normal for humans to care more about the well being of other humans than a cow. But I don't think it's because we are somehow special and our lives are sacred.

Well, the reason we do care about our species is the same reason we care about our family / clan / church / nation / skin color: we are territorial apes hardwired to put borders around everything and start killin' anything on the other side.

But I'm saying there's actually a good, non-ape reason to mark off our species as special. When the giraffes start building radio telescopes they can join too.

One of my cats is more intelligent than most four year olds. Does that count?

(One of her favorite things to do, if we leave the door to the garage unlocked, is to jump up and unlatch it, then watch the other cat use his claws to open the door enough to get out. She then strolls away without a care in the world since he hasn't figured out how to get back in)

I've had 7 cats in my life. And I love my cats. But they're as dumb as a stump.

Cats are smart to their own means and ends. They care not about how we mostly-hairless apes perceive them. We're merely here to serve and amuse them.

The smartest four-legged creature I've known was a German shepherd. I swear that dog knew and understood chain of command around the farm: hired hand's son, hired hand, farmer's sons (youngest to oldest), farmer, nice lady who lives in farm house and puts steak instead of kibble in bowl on Sundays (i.e. farmer's wife). He only listened to the highest ranking on that list present at the time. He was an awesome dog.

I would buy that (maybe) if I felt most of those attending church right along side me all these years weren't just as corrupt, amoral, deceitful and full of crap as some of those that don't.

It's similar to why I as a Christian think God would vehemently defend a monogamous homosexual marriage that was filled with love and respect - especially in light of the fact heterosexuals have done far more damage to the "sanctity" of it than any homosexual could ever in 100 lifetimes try to approach.

Yeah, but that's not the fault of the religion. Says right there in the Preamble that we are all sinners. Religion doesn't make us any less sinful -- it just puts our sinfulness into the proper context as a flaw marring our ideal form in the sight of God. It's like teaching us cursive writing by starting us with a page of perfectly formed letters. We then do our best, and the people who have come before us along the path try to help us by showing us what worked for them, or how they avoided certain pitfalls. "Bend your hand a little more out and that makes the arcs of the b and d more regular..."

The proper comparison is not between religious and non-religious people. It is looking at the life of the believer and seeing if he improves over time.

My point was God/religion doesn't in and of itself lead to a more 'righteous' outcome.

Religiosity is neither a necessary nor sufficient factor in the acquisition of morality: what causes one to be 'righteous' is an independent factor in their character. Some people have come to a moral awakening through faith while others have come to it via love, family, self-reflection, suffering...

Religion should be studied as an efficacious (or not) technique for living a good life -- eudaimonia.

Maybe...maybe if the cop didnt suggest the neighbor had the right to manhandle her kid she wouldnt have been so incensed. (and the officer did by questioning why the neighbor didnt have the right to do so to the lady)

While the video is definitely jumpy...nothing suggests she should have been arrested. And why did nothing happen to the neighbor who was the reason for this call? The cop was being a dick...

I agree the cop should not have said it was ok for the kid to be grabbed, but if the lady had remained calm she wouldn't have got arrested. At least one lady can be seen getting aggressive with a cop about halfway into the video. My guess is she got up on him which was stupid because he had already made it clear he was probably not going to favor their side of things. So yeah he was a dick, but she was an idiot.

At least 1 if not 2 people appear to be 'wrestling' with a cop about 40 seconds into that clip. Also the person with the camera didn't film everything so who knows how much was missed? That's what I meant by "remaining calm".
