Yale was a 15th seed and played Q 3X in the regular season and playoffs losing all three, while averaging 1G/game with a total goal differential of 13-3 in favor of Q. Although Yale deserves credit for elevating their game in the postseason, most college hockey fans would agree that statistically they were NOT the best team in NCAA D1 hockey this season.
Personally, I'm not interested in seeing a team not ranked in the top ten in the nation for most of the season win a national championship. Fans want to see the best teams all season go head to head in a national tournament. In my view, any team that consistently ranks high throughout the season deserves a better shot at proving it in the postseason than just playing a lower seed in the NCAA regionals.
Two of Yale's tournament wins were OT Ws. IMO if they played ANY of teams they beat in the NCAA tournament in a best of 3, they lose those series. All the more reason to alter the NCAA tournament and eliminate the single elimination format for a "best of" series format similar to what is done in the NHL. Logistics might be a bit challenging, but I think changing to a tournament series format could be done starting with using college campus sites of top tournament teams for regional playoffs, which would also solve the perennial problem of poorly attended regionals at neutral sites.
