Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Nice win by Yale this evening! They were dominated in shots in the first period but slowly climbed back into the game on the back of Malcolm who was stellar again tonight. Definitely a full team effort with Andrew Miller getting the first star for finding the net twice. His second goal was the fourth of the game for Yale and was an absolute laser from the point. What made it sweeter was the reason for this power play goal was a boarding call against SLU where Miller was the victim of a really bad hit from behind that should have been a five minute major. Karma is a +$#@! sometimes. This was my first time seeing the team in person and I was impressed by the play of freshmen Cooper, O'Gara and Wilson. Agostino worked very hard for some great chances to no avail. Langaniere had an off night, taking some dumb penalties. SLU was as good as advertised , but the Yale defense harassed them enough and it seemed they tried to keep the play along the boards, which seemed to frustrate Carey and Flanagan greatly. The ECAC is going to be a shootout this year, judging by tonights results.

I also enjoyed my first game of the season tonight. Nice Yale performance against a good team. Did anyone notice toward the end of the game play was stopped because there were two pucks on the ice? Did anyone see who caused that?

I did see that but didn't see who caused it. Strange.
A question in return - with about 2 minutes to go, and about the time Ags was coming out of the penalty box, Malcolm pounded the ice with his stick 4 times. What was he signaling? Did St L pull their goalie and I missed it?

I think on the previous play when the puck went into the netting, no one noticed the puck come back into play, they were too busy arguing about who tipped it into the netting. That's my uneducated guess.

On the tapping of the stick.....Goalies do that to "signal" their teammates that the penalty PP is about to expire to make the players on the ice "aware" that the player will be coming out of the penalty box. On the two pucks issue I too was curious about that. I wasn't so much curious as to how the puck got there as to why the face off stayed in the SLU end? I would have thought in a situation like that (not the fault of either team) that it would have come out to the neutral zone.

Couple of points. First Yale deserved the victory. Although the SOG were fairly even overall........Yales chances were more grade "A" types than ours were. Wenniger was tested way more than Malcolm was. Overall you have way more depth than we did and once you get past our first two lines I think that was a major difference in the game. Plus...it seemed like your boys were hungrier than ours. Overall it was a good team win for Yale.
As you would expect I will disagree with you on the hit. Wick is a pretty clean player but he does hit hard, often and with authority. The ref got the call right with boarding but it in no way warranted more than that. In fact where I was sitting a few people (I don't agree) were questioning why it was a penalty.

One other tidbit........I happened to be standing next to an NHL guy (not a scout) but who was there in that capacity because of the lockout. He had a list of "undrafted" players and was there to check a few kids out (from both teams.) It seemed his primary guy to check out was Langaniere. I talked with him frequently during the course of the game and it was interesting to see him making notes on players. Ironically when Langaniere got the penalty for mouthing off to the refs.......the guy started writing furiously in his notes........made a comment about it was a good time to go to the bathroom, and I didn't see him again the rest of the night. Hope your boy didn't do himself some damage with that incident.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

I just so happened to be trying out my new iPhone for video at the time of the hit on Miller. Make no mistake, this was the definition of a boarding major. As soon as I figure out how to transfer the video to this message board I will. Watching it from my viewpoint, six feet from where the hit occurred, was nauseating. Thankfully, he was okay.

And here is the link to the video of the Hit on Andrew Miller in the SLU game this past Saturday. A show of hands on 5 minutes and a game versue a 2 minute minor? Thankfully our most skilled player was not seriously injured ... in fact coming back on the ensuing powerplay to bury a slapshot goal. Best revenge!

Just watched it.....and saw it live at the game as well and was down that end (although no where near as close as you were.) I stand by my original statement. Two minutes was the correct call. Hard to slow it down but it looks to me to be the typical scenario where Miller is skating across....Wick comes to hit him from the side (which you can see he is trying to do at the start of the hit)........Miller turns his back and the result was what you saw. I'd say for it to be 5 his back would have had to have been turned the whole time Wick was getting ready to make contact (but it wasn't and was going to be a clean hit until he turned.)

Did you hear the sound of his head hitting the boards? I wasn't going to get into with you again, but you are clearly clouded by your devotion to the Saints. Make up all the excuses you want, it was hit from behind on a defenseless player.

In the image below, the red thing behind Millers head is Wicks right glove, driving Millers head into the boards. It was a bang bang play, but it was a hit from behind with intent.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Great opportunity for the Bulldogs as they hit the road to play two nationally ranked teams this coming week. Very curious as to how we'll stack up against the WCHA elite. I like our young talent and if we get solid goaltending we can play with anyone. Predictions?

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

I think the CC game is going to be close, they will have to play their tails off to escape from Denver with a win, DU is playing at a very high level right now. Both opponents are battle tested having played each other this weekend. As I stated in the thread about these games, I fear Yale has not been together long enough and after a long layoff may be rusty. The entire schedule this season is non-continuous mess and will hurt the Eli in the long run.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Does anybody know why Yale doesn't have the hockey audio broadcast on good old fashioned commercial AM or FM radio here in the New Haven area? We have a Division 1 hockey program here, playing nationally ranked powerhouses and we have to rely on the opposing schools broadcasts on the internet for coverage.

We don't always have internet to fall back on. Would be nice to hear Yale hockey on the radio in the car or at home without having the computer on. WYBC 1340 AM, which carried Yale hockey a couple of years ago, now streams NPR via Sacred Heart. Quinnipiac does a nice job broadcasting their games on 1220 AM. You would think that WELI 960 AM would be interested, as they already broadcast the Yale football games. Thoughts?

By the way, wishing everybody a Happy Thanksgiving.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

I was very impressed with the quality of the free internet video they now provide for home games, with coaches and press interviews etc. Having the whole replay of every home game is also an asset that most schools do not provide. I also enjoyed the WYBC broadcasts and the Yale Radio music format that they had up until two years ago. I believe last year WYBC did have a broadcast, but it was an "internet only" feed. WELI has become more and more syndicated as the years have gone on (as has most of local radio). You just don't have the Ron Rohmer's of the radio world who were local broadcasters. WELI does do a nice job with Yale football though. They may want to switch to hockey as I think it may be better attended than foot ball lately.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Agree about the schedule. They are a young team skating anywhere up to 8 Freshmen, 3 consistently until last week on defense. They will only improve as the season progresses, but they could hurt themselves for post-season consideration with any continued early loses (such as Clarkson) that they should win

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Sounds like Liffey's is willing to show both this weekends games...might hit up the women's game and then totter over tomorrow

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Good luck to The Eli this weekend, the teams performance this weekend will most likely foreshadow how they do the rest of the way this year. Altitude will be a factor that really cannot be determined until the games start, gonna be alot of short shifts I would presume. In years past, this would be the type of trip that Allain would give a back-up goalie a start, I hope he sticks with Malcolm both games.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Great OT win by Yale tonight. I only was able to see the last 6 minutes of regulation and OT. From what the announcers mentioned, it looks like the Yale forecheck threw the Pioneers off of their game. Another quality win!
