Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Yale's amazing victory brought special inspiration to a family of Cornell and Harvard grads going through a profoundly difficult time. My cousin-in-law, who was courageous, inspiring and wonderful to an extent that words cannot do justice, passed away after a 14 year battle with a rare form of thyroid cancer. I saw her husband, former drum major for the Cornell band, on Friday night at a dinner in his wife's honor and his eyes lit up as he talked about watching Yale beat UML with his kids and others. "We all almost forgot what was going on," he said.

Saturday night's post-memorial service family get-together turned into a rousing college hockey party of people age 18-80, including two generations of Cornell and Harvard grads, plus students at Colgate, Union and Providence, who packed the TV room and universally rooted for Yale. It was a show of solidarity from otherwise-rivals that could only have been inspired by what might have been the greatest NCAA tournament run in college hockey history. We all felt great pride in watching Yale strike a blow for Ivy League sports and true student athletes everywhere. Amazing that they could pull this off without providing athletic scholarships against what are essentially minor league professional teams like Minnesota and North Dakota. Harvard did it 24 years ago but I think it's even harder in this day and age.

For this Harvard grad, looking ahead, it's impossible to imagine despising Yale even if they keep walloping Harvard for years to come. Keith Allain is such a class act and his program represents all that is good about Ivy League sports and athletics at other ECAC schools that generally have high academic standards. Thanks Bulldogs for bringing light into an otherwise dark weekend.

Wow, 4faz. So sorry for your loss, but I agree completely. Ivies can hate the hell out of one another when they play each other, but I've always been a big believer that it's us against them most of the time. Thanks for sharing such a moving story. I hope what you guys did together helped somewhat with the grieving process.

I hope he had the chance to watch at least some of the game on Saturday night... I hope he had enjoyed a phone call or two from friends on what turned out to be a very satisfying night.

Thank you for a truly inspiring post. This was a hockey road trip that I will never forget; unfortunately, events in my hometown of Boston today have brought us back to reality. I am very sorry for your loss.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Congratulations to Yale and its fans from this Boston native longtime BC fan. I easily "adopted" your team after the Eagles' exit.

I've rooted for BC since 1973 but I also lived in Hartford from 1977 to 1988 and always enjoyed visits to Ingalls. I still go up there a couple of times a year from Staten Island, NY, and my girlfriend likes the museums, too.

Tip of the hat to Quinnipiac, too, for an inspired run.

This is great not only for the ECAC and the New Haven region, but for college sports fans in Connecticut that are sick and tired of "all UConn, all the time."

Sorry to hear about Tim Taylor, one of the sport's classiest people.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Congrats to Yale. Awesome run and awesome game! Your win helped me keep my dinner down as a Q-Pac win would have been really upsetting given they were playing any other ECAC team in the big dance! Very impressive run in the NCAA's and a nice gift to Tim Taylor who is one of the nicest and classiest guys in the sport. Can't say I am on the same page as everyone about Keith Allain...gruff yes, class?? Ummm! I will say this though which is he has assembled a great team and they were well coached when it mattered.

Just wanted to say thank you to Yale and Q-Pac for representing the ECAC so well.

That is sad. Prayers for coach Taylor.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

While I'm not sure who votes in the USCHO.com polls, there are at least 3 of them who tragically were unable to watch the final and in addition don't know the result.
If someone could please find out who they are and send me their addresses, I will be happy to provide them with the tape so they can enjoy watching one of the greatest goaltender performances ever in a final by Jeff Malcolm leading Yale to their first ever championship.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Congratulations from the Denver fan base. I grew up going to Yale games in the 60s, always loved that rink, hated Harvard! Look at you now, bravo!!!!!

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Well done. Enough with my whining like a SLU fan; you guys had the right match-ups and got to the top. To win, you have to be both good and lucky. You were both of those this year. Congrats. As a connoisseur of Eurobeat music, I was saving this song in case RPI had won even the ECAC championship, but given you guys started as the 15 seed in the tournament, the song is just as appropriate for you. Enjoy it, you deserve it.
